Has anyone ever purchased one of the so called "sealed" old proof sets? I found a (SEALED 1963 Silver Proof Set Flat Pack) up for auction. Current bid is only $7, with next bid $11. Wondering if it would be worth bidding on and then sending the coins in to be slabbed. Thoughts?

This question comes up quite a bit
Sealed bags are a hoax!
You can easily buy new bags and seal these sets. You can open the sets and reseal them. I have even heard of the mint never even sealing them in the first place.

The US Mint never sealed their proof nor mint set envelopes. If you want a flat pack proof or mint set in the old "flat packs", make sure you can see the coins your bidding on, buy the coins not the envelope.

Iknerr is 100% correct. the mint has never sealed an envelope (NEVER) them "original" sealed flat packs are a hoax they are either dead wrong thief's or unacknowledged sellers who should not sale an item they don't know anything about. but I would not buy from someone that don't know what they have. that's another hoax the "I'm not a collector and know nothing about this item" they either know about that item and are trying to make you feel smarter than you are or they are thieves I would put my money on the later stay away from them and let them go where they can multiply together somewhere else lol Gary

The envelopes on all my proof/mint sets from that year (and others around that year) were in fact sealed. And mine were in the unopened shipping box from the mint. Now, maybe the mint didn't seal them, in that case, some moisture found it's way there over the years because all mine were sealed.
My 2 cents.

I will agree that moisture probably did seal them especially if you live in area that has the high humidity thing going on. I live in MI and the humidity here will partially seal some of my brand new envelopes I bought from the store to send letter, bills etc. However from what I've learned and read in my United States mint and proof set book by Ron Guth and Bill Gale it states "The warning against buying sealed Proof Sets applies to (my insertion 1955,56,57,58,59,60,61,62,63,64) as well. Sealed Sets are more likely to contain substituted coins(and even non coins) than they are to contain Deep Cameo Proofs" There is a simular statement that applies to all boxed set 1955 and back. Proof sets and mint sets are of of my passions so I had to educate myself. I love the book I have, it's saved me many $$$ as it also has pictures of all the original mint packaging and how many coins were in each set.

I Love the part in his description were he is totally honest, says he checked the coins and bought a new envelope and resealed it. the sad part is someone wil not read down that far and bid like mad.

From 1952 to present I've ordered Proof and Uncirc sets from the Mint. The first time I read something like this I ran and looked at my oldest proof sets. NONE had been opened by me and NONE were sealed. So either the Mint sent me their only unopened sets or sealed sets were not sent out.

The only time I KNOW the Mint sealed the envelopes was sometimes in the early 60's if you ordered just one set they would seal the envelope put a stamp on it, address it, and drop it in the mail.

graceoutcast ...... you sure did, lol it's a good price right now.
We should have a bidding war at 25 cent increments to reward this seller.

Thanks for all the input. I put a low ball bid in which quickly got passed. Was bidding on a different site than ebay. I'm sort of starting to hate ebay due to all the scams on it.
