For the past 20+ years my dad has carried a half dollar in his pocket. At this point, I think it is just a smooth disc. I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm pretty sure all the words, numbers, and images have been worn off. It is still 'clean', meaning it isn't tarnished or covered with finger prints.

I don't know why he carries it , and I'm not sure he even remembers why he started anymore, but this got me thinking. I was looking through the new Presidential dollars from the bank, all clean and shiny and never touched. I wondered how it would age in my pocket getting touched, bouncing off of change, getting thrown onto the dresser at night, etc. So I started carrying one around three weeks ago.

Let me tell you, these things don't age well at all. After three weeks the obverse is getting dark, there isn't a hint of that new coin shine left. Liberty and the surrounding field on the reverse is the same. The USofA inscription still looks alright, but it is still no where close to pretty anymore. The rim now holds a brownish/red color but the edges which keep rubbing against everything are still the original color.

Overall, a disappointment I would say. The only way to get some really nice versions for your collection is to buy them new and handle them with gloves. If you were to get one from circulation, it would no doubt be covered with grime and oil from fingers and not look good.

Maybe I should keep experimenting, perhaps with Acetone to clean, or olive oil, or a rag and some kind of polish or even just water (it would help me learn what a cleaned coin looks like). I also wonder what these will look like if/when the gold color fades. Will they look better, worse, dull, just like a quarter? Thoughts?

If you want to just make a coin shine, try somethe different solutions used to clean guns. The solvents are strong enough to remove gun powder so should do wonders on your coins. I normally don't like to tell people to do this but if doing it on plain coins not worth much, the experimentation is worth the time.
I would suggest that you do the following though. Keep track of what you do exactly. If for instance you put a coin in Olive Oil. Keep track to the type of container. Glass, Aluminum, Steel, etc. The room temperature, amount and type of lighting, anything on the Oil's label of importance. The reason is if you like a finished product, you may want to do the exact same thing again and documentation will alow that. Ever notice in even the Frankenstien Movies, Egor rights down everything the doctor does. Can't make a monster the same without documentation you know.
As to your dad carrying the same coin all the time, superstitious I guess. Everytime I go to a flea market I take the same platic bag. Not sure if it helps but I don't want to take a chance. I have a small tape measure on my key chain. Never used it for 20 years but it's still there. Don't know if I could carry my keys without that.

I've been carrying an Adams dollar for several weeks, rattling around in my pocket along with whatever other change I have. Its original "gold" color is changing...developing a really nice patina, in my opinion. I don't have time to photograph it now, and am not sure if photos will show the patina well, but will try maybe this evening or tomorrow. At any rate, the underlying mint luster is still evident as you rotate the coin in good light.

There is definite rub happening along Adams' cheek and jaw line as well as the portion of his forehead directly above his right eye. There is also rub on the lapels and collar of his coat...both sides.

On the reverse the most noticeable rub is along Lady Liberty's extended arm, particularly the inner surface of her elbow. There is a lesser amount of rub along her face and on the draped cloth hanging down below her neckline. Finally, there is wear on the folded fingers of Liberty's left hand.
Rest in Peace

I also have been carrying an Adams Dollar around in my pocket.

Happy to say, no change noticed except for maybe a few dings from other coins.

Still bright and shiny.
