Picked this up in an antique shop recently for £4.

Weight 2.8g.

Having googled a bit, I have identified it as a jeton made by Wolf Laufer of Nuremburg in 1615, to commemorate the coronation of Louis XIII of France at Rheims in 1610. It shows traces of a silver wash/coating.

Is it genuine?

I read of some royalty around then handing out similar pieces to crowds as a publilicty stunt at major events. This would be a few years too late for that. Was it for use on a counting table? If not, what was it for?

Hello anaximander,

It looks genuine to me. And where it used for. If you look at this site below. There is an explenation about jetons from france, nurnberg and others. Very interesting.

a bit late, but better late than never

the jeton below seems related, although some details appear different, alloy, date and the signature of Krauwinckel which appears absent on the jeton above

Your jeton (in german "rechenpfennig") is made by Wolf Lauffer II, master 1612-1651.
Described in "Nuremberg jetons, vol2"" by Groenendijk/Levinson nr. 164
