It appears (to me) to be a worn die - notice the die flow on the east end of Monticello.
The last two photos are, however, are a bit of a puzzle. I don't think it's an S though.

It is interesting and not sure there are any records of 61 D/S... Would like to know more ideas how this feature developed. More pics:

The"S" mint mark punches were bit used from 1956-1967. So an OM wouldn't happen during those years. (The 1956 had a couple of OM. Some considered questionable?)

OM? Went to the glossary but still can't figure. Coop: what's your opinion or thoughts it might be?

OM - over mintmark. Yours looks like a die chip to me.

Judging from the new photos I'd say it took a hit. In the first and last of the sunlight photos I think I can see where contact was made and that would account for the metal displacement on the bottom of the D.
But I am just guessing.

I think there are some over mintmarks for these years or so it would appear what do you guys think? Look like a D over an S maybe a horizontal S ? Idk but Die Deteriation I'm not thinking so? Something is going on

A mintmark punch would leave a raised area, like a raised device. Note on the last image submitted? The affected area is showing a rise in the direction towards the rim. That's exactly what die wear does. So it is not punch related at all. Just die wear. After a car company closes, do you see a new model again from tat factory? No. So how could you expect to see 'S' mints after the mint had closed in 1955? It reopened in 1965 without mintmarks until 1968 when it was strikingly business strike coins and proof coins with the S mintmarks. Regardless on how bad we would want to speculate something, some facts need to be considered. The mint would have to be opened during that time period. (Not closed all ready for several years) A mintmark would have to be raised fully above the fields, not just a bulge in direction of normal die wear. Note how the punch on the die is visible? Raised, not some rising on the fields in the direction of die wear.

I also noticed that at the base foot of "A" there is the same marking.
