In other words "it has been searched for good coins." Why can't they just count out the darn Morgan dollars? Would it be too hard to type up a list of the proof sets? Or what exactly those blue albums contain, even in general? |

I think they have definitely been searched...looks like most are in some type of holder! Plus there is a reserve so the seller isn't going to lose money apparently.

A few years back I bought a bulk load of Jeffersons with a few other coins thrown in. The seller had a low feed back and none of his other auctions had been for large lots. He listed pretty much all the coins with grades. I deducted one grade off the list and added the total Red Book value. I then bid 60% of this which was just under $800. Not surprisingly I won. I got an e-mail from the seller telling me I did real good as he had paid over $2000 for the collection. When the coins arrived I cataloged them and priced them the total value was in the region of $750 so I lost a money on the deal but was not overly surprised. Would I do it again? Maybe but never from some one who sells bulk lots on a regular basis. |

I think that is key, nohope, that you can't buy these lots from people who sell them on a regular basis. I have bought large lots of coins before and (lucked out twice) but each time they were from private individuals and not dealers.

 I buy bulk lots all of the time. It's definitely not for the squeamish or the easily disappointed. Edited by halfabustisbetter

Scam is a little harsh, how about "pile of junk that's left after cherry-picking with a fine-toothed comb that we don't want sitting in inventory because we won't sell it for years so let's put an ad on ebay and hope someone calls us so we can sell it to them for a ridiculous price and they will feel like they scammed everybody else on ebay." More like that maybe? |

Sure they could do that, but then people would have a much better idea of the actual value of the group and it would actually probably result in REDUCED bids. Those who know what they are doing would realize there was nothing there and pass, those people hoping to get some unrecognized valuable whould see that it isn't there and would pass, and the reasonable people who might actually be interested in what is actually there would have a fair idea of the actual value and lowball bid. Those bulk lot sellers are depending on the gullible and those hoping to get something for nothing. Listing actuall contents defeats the purpose. Also it lets them get rid of a lot of common low value stuff that most people in their right minds would never bid on. |

I refuse to buy from anyone that would treat coins they way they do in those pictures. Tossed all over the table like it's some sort of pot in a poker game.

That's not entirely true. I collect mostly foreign coins and some U.S. Occasionally I get a bunch of coins that I have no use for and I put them up on e-bay. Right now I have a little over 3 pounds of wheat pennies, when it gets to 5 pounds, it's going up for auction. I have no clue what's in there other than wheat pennies. I do not have the time or inclination to sort thru 400-500 coins of a type that I do not collect.

I have bought bulk lots from both big coin dealers and private collectors on ebay. All were good experiences. Definitely need to do your homework, ask seller lots of questions, and don't overbid. If seller doesn't provide pictures you request or doesn't answer questions clearly, avoid the seller and don't bid. I stay away from fuzzy picture listings unless seller can provide better pics. Most of them put reserves, but in several cases I was top bidder below reserve and the seller let me have it for that price. I have gotten some great deals buying in bulk. |

I've bought several large lots of coins and was happy with what I bought. Keep in mind that in this example they list 125 lbs in silver. Unless they have weight the lot with all the books and holders removed, the total weight is going to be a lot less than what is listed.
