Hello all, I only posted (a lot though) past couple days. I don't want to break rules here so please don't get too mad if this is breaking of the rules. I read the rules and didn't see where you couldn't put something like this so here goes. In the Sunday paper a couple weeks ago, there was an ad for the Presidential dollar coin book from Littleton, Colorado. I looked at the prices of all the other books for this and they were about the same price, so for 4.95 I bought it, and it comes with a free uncirulated US Gold colored dollar. So that was worth it all in all as shipping was free. But when I got it today, it came with "extras" that really made it worthwhile. It came with three coins...Walking liberty silver half dollar in fine condition, Mercury silver dime in circulated but good condition and a Buffalo nickel (common one, but date etc they say fine condition. All coins are individually packaged. Anyway, thought this was a good deal. I was thinking maybe this site is a coin company and I don't want to undermine that of course! I see those ads all the time in the paper but most are not worth it or scam-looking but this one I had a feeling about. Very impressed. I won't post the name of the company, but if anyone wants it, they can email.

Hi Dahoov, Sounds like a good deal, all right! With silver selling for nearly 10X face value right now, your 60¢ worth of silver coins is easily worth the $4.95 cost. The book, the Buffalo nickel, and the president dollar are basically free. Nice!

Dahoov2,
It sounds like you might have joined Littleton Coin Co. in NH. This sounds like their approval selections. If it is Littleton Coin, be sure to check the invoice that came with your shipment since they will be expecting your payment soon.
If this is not Littleton I would say you got a great deal!

The "extras" are part of the Coins-On-Approval Program that they expect you to pay extra for or send back, do not think that they are freebies. Littleton Coin Company is not in Colorado, they are based in New Hampshire. They have been in business since the 50s I believe. They are a reputable company with a large customer base. They run loss leaders like those coin folders in newspaper ads to add people to their subscription lists. It is not difficult to get removed and they do not try to trap you like some less reputable companies do. Their coins are usually of decent quality but prices tend to be on the high side. If you are averse to buying from the internet and ebay or do not live near coin shops or shows, Littleton is a decent way to accumulate a collection.

Oh man, they didn't mention that in the ad now did they? I'll have to call them to cancel. What a scam. So, is it common for this sort of thing to happen and anything else (other companies to watch for)? I guess some of it isn't a bad deal but I am not into the purchasing aspect of coins other than the mint sets (which I've been collecting since 1999 for my kids). I'll be returning this with a note and thanks for letting me know about this. And here I thought I got a good deal. Now you know how much of a novice I am! I'll stick with the Whitman books! THANKS for the heads up.

For 5 or 10 bucks, how can you really go wrong?. keep'em but cancel everything else if the price is right and you like the selection they sent. Do you already have any of these coins in your collection now?. When you decide what you are going to do, let us know. And, uuh, post a picture of what they sent. I'd love to see!.

Most of littletons ads contain ,(Perhaps in small print) that by returning the offer you will in fact be joining the coins on approval program ,, at any rate of all the companies that do this sort of thing littleton is IMO the best of them.
a decent collection can be accumulated through them if your careful about the coins you choose to keep or make special requests from them .

I have yet to see a Littleton advertisement that wasn't a promotion for their coins on approval service.
To their benefit, they usually have good promos and they are very good about honoring your request to cancel (which makes sense or they would probably lose more from people that refuse to keep paying postage to send back the coins).
