I want to start collecting coins. I bought $10 worth of lincoln cents. I am seperating them into (2000,2003) then 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s. Then I am going to go look for marks that could be on certain dates eg.. 1997 has Double-die, look at the Ear Lobe like the 84.
Is this the way to do it?

Really there is no wrong way to sort the cents just some systems are better than others ,, as long as when your done you are sure that you have looked at all the dates and coins which may be a variety and are satisfied that you did not miss anything then however you do it is ok .

Where did you buy them? Hopefully, you mean that you went to the bank and asked the teller for $10.00 in cents and didn't buy them off ebay for $29.95 plus S&H. You might think about getting a box or 2 to set aside for a rainy day, if you can afford a $100 door stop. After you sort and pick out all of the ones you want to keep, you should also set aside the wheaties and all pre 1982 coins as they have more copper in them than the copper coated cent from post 1982. All the other ones that you don't want you can roll back up and take back to the bank. You should mark the rolls so that you dont keep searching the same rolls and you should return the rolls a different branch than you got them from. If you want, you can try to build date rolls, a roll of 50 cents with the same date/mintmark. You can buy a box or 2 of clear plastic cent tubes (100 tubes per box) from your local coin shop and dedicate one roll per date and as you sort, and don't find any real gems, toss them in their date tube and watch the collection grow. Searching cents is fundamentally baby steps in coin collecting. There isn't really anyway to do it wrong. Everyone has their own searching rituals. Develope your own and have fun. You might also want to buy a lighted magnifying glass, one that screws onto the edge of the table on a swing arm...it lets you see without causing eye strain and lets you work hands free.

Good luck finding any Lincolns 1960 and later in bank rolls. They are very rare in ciculation, even the 1970's are hard to come by. The fastest and easiest way to get started is to buy a complete 1959 - up BU set from ebay or elsewhere for about $20. Then you can totally focus on the older coins.

I bet each and every time I go to the store I am picking out a 1970-1979 out of the change given. Is this just a East Coast thing?

I guess it must be an east coast thing, went to bank and bought $10 / pennies. More than 50% was pre 1982 coppers. Plus as the added bonus 52 wheats, oldest is 1911. there are still the chances out there, just have to search the rolls.

your best luck I find is a bank of mine sells the CWR ( customer wrapped rolls ) back to you. typically you can tell which ones they are, folded paper ends to them. seems like some one cleaned out the old penny jar for me, thankyou.

In last last few weeks I been doing some big time searching on penny rolls. 1. First week I spent 125 on 5 fed boxes. Found 1919 d cent in that batch. 2. Secord week I sold lefht over to bank for 100 bucks after keeping bu coins, wheats, all pre 82 coins. 3. Third week I sold 76 dollars worth 83 thru 2007 zincs to today and bought 3 more boxes to search before I sell them again next week and buy another round of boxes. I am going keep going intill I broke since I been keeping all pre 82 copper coins. I am on my third week on so far with same 125.00 I started out with. Finds so far on coins. 1. I am running about 25% on 1959 thru 1981 pennys. I am removing them to be sold later on ebay since they worth more money than face since they copper 2. On wheats out the all boxs went there. I onley found one roll or 60 wheats so far. Best one was 1919 d coins. Rest were culls or 1940 thru 1958 common date junk. They are rare these days for common date stuff from 1940 thru 1958 3. Lots bu or au coins that can be installed in 1959 thru 2007 book. I am filling 9 books full of them at same time . Why buy the the bu 59 thru 2007 set on ebay for 20 bucks. I have completed serval sets so far from fed boxes. 4. I found two unplated zincs so far in boxes with 3 1970 small dates so far. The hard coins to find I am learning are the 1982 small dates, 68 thru 74 s mints. The rest are easy. I need those install in my books. I am happy I been finding au or bu clean red cents pre 82 coins for my sets I am building. Its takes an lot time to search them boxes since there are 2500 coins per fedbox. Take your time and enjoy going after those cool coins. If I was you I would buy an coin tube thats counts the coins to reroll them. Its faster becides counting them to make rolls to sale back to bank. Have fun and enjoy yourself going those penny rolls. I love it to much and my best find this year was an 1890 penny in the summer this year. Chevrolet454ss

Because you're finished in a few seconds with a couple mouse clicks. LOL Personally, I don't have hours and hours to spend searching rolls.

Plus you're buying a set that's uncirculated.

Badthad, Yechi7, I know those bu 59 thru 07 kits are nice that cost 20 bucks. Main reason I not buying them. I am trying to update 13 penny books that are from 1909 thru 1974 for resale on ebay. At 20 bucks x 13 sets cost 230 bucks for all those bu cents. It dont make sense to me since an lot them are striped sets with no keys in 1909 thru 1933 section of book. An lot them foldors are old wore out old folders. I bought them over last few monlths on ebay to strip out stuff like keys , semi keys to build 3 complete sets of 1909 thru 2007 sets. My keeper sets they are bu from those 59 thru 2007 sets from ebay. I just dont want spend 230 dollars for bu coins and new foldors for the 1909 thru 1974 sections. I am buying new folders for 75 thru 2007 sections to update them. On the 59 thru 2007 sections. They are an mix of bu or au coins, Oldor stuff is brown. Some of them I put bu since I had extra bu rolls to build them . I may need to buy 68 thru 74 s bu rolls, 82 small date rolls to finish sets Since they are strip out sets I am trying my best to make them look good to dump on ebay as starter sets or set builders. I know its nuts to try build 13 sets all at same time and takes an long time to rebuild that many books. It cheaper to buy intire collections or sets from peaple becides buying single coins to build 3 sets like I did to keep for my collection. Chevrolet454ss
