Sounded like a good way pass some time and maybe find something interesting. Picked up 5000 pennies from the bank last week and have made it through the first 1000. My finds.
1. No wheat cents.
2. No S mints.
3. Zinc running about 4 to 1. Finding usually 10 to 12 copper per
roll. Mostly in the seventies.
4. No errors or varities of any kind.
Found a few minor die cracks. Mainly off a corner of the Memorial to the rim. No Machine Doubling. This is what makes me believe I'm not doing something right.
Here is how I operate. Using 10x loupe. Anything extremely green or damaged goes right recycle bucket. Looking for the obvisous, Dbl ears, Wide AM, any kind of doubling, etc. Spending 10 to 15 seconds on each coin. I know a 1000 pennies is not a lot, but if anybody has some tips before I start the next 1000 it sure would be appreciated.
To end on a high note, I did find the sexiest 5 I've seen on a coin.

Based on what I've been finding - 5 wheats in 2000 - you should be picking up more. Perhaps your rolls have been searched already? Or maybe it's just stochastic and in your last roll you'll find 10! Keep going!

And nice 5 by the way!

Morgan, I just picked up $50 in cents and have gone thru half.

Found:

10 Wheaties, including a well worn 1917

some machine doubles but nothing great or important.

Hitting about 25% coppers like you

Be sure you are gleaning out the dates to look at and this is where the Cherry Pickers Guide or coppercoins book "Looking through Lincoln Cents"
help a lot.

I use my scope, about 15 secs a coin seems right. Keep it up, you are doing it right.

I went thru 20 rolls yesterday, and found maybe 20% copper. Not knowing what to look for, besides "95 double, a look takes a half second. Did find one funky, excuse me, unusual one. Some words coming out of Lincolns mouth?

One more thing I did not mention, I open the number of rolls I intend to look thru that evening and then sort then out by date. Then, before starting each date I refer to the book I am using to refresh myself with the markers on a coin that might be of interest. I cannot keep them straight in my head if I am going thru them as they fall on the table. This has certainly helped me not miss anything.

Thanks all, this second 1000 seems to be a little more fruitful. Four wheats allready and only 300 gone thru.
