Thad,

I see a hit above the "N" in "ONE", a hit in the field below "AMERICA", hits to the O, E and C on the rev. On the obv. there is a little hit below the date and something going on with the rim at 10:00. The obv. is a strong MS-65 and I really like it. The rev. brings the overall grade to an MS-64 I believe. Having said all of this, this is truly one of the nicest 09's I have seen. Great coin!

Thanks for looking everyone. This is another coin I've had a couple dealers look at for me. They both called it an MS65, I gave it a 64, but I seem to grade too hard on MS coins. The official designation in my records is MS65 RD. Photography brings out the smallest flaws which you don't really notice when you grade like you're supposed to just "using the eye".

Thad,

That is true. Most of my Lincolns are not 6" in diameter.

How does PCGS and NGC grade, in hand? I had read somewhere that they grade in hand then under 5X for final grade?

PS, I would give it an MS64-5 grade, the detail on the beard, forehead, and neck look great. These grade all the way up to MS67 for PCGS and NGC.

Good question, I don't have a clue. I just know all the dealers I've talked with tell me to try to grade by eye in-hand. Put in under good light, tilt and rotate it while inspecting. The ONLY time I see my main guy use a loop (and I see him 1-2 week), is when there's a coin that's worth more than like $500, LOL.

Under stricter standards this coin could not grade as a 65 with the large hit on the focal area of the shoulder ,, I'm sure that hit is visable with out magnification .

as are the ones on the O of One , and the E in Cent and the C in america on the reverse .all focal area hits

and red is a stretch if the color in the pics is accurate ,,slightly liberal 64 RB more accurate Gem 63 RB

Nice coin...due to some of the little hits, I'd conservatively go with 63+ on this one. I'm no expert on Lincoln cents, but can someone tell me if the color on the reverse is totally normal? Maybe it was the way it was photographed, but that color looks a little off.

Metalman, I agree with a 64 but definately not RB. There's not the slightest trace of brown on this coin, it's BRIGHT red everywhere. Where are you seeing brown?

I will have to agree with Metalman here, that hit on the shoulder and a hit on the cheekbone (if that's what it is ) would preclude a 65 grade. The obv "E" in WE and the first "T" in trust look like they are hit also. Along with the reverse letter hits I will go with a very nice MS-63 RB. The reverse does not look red in the pics, if it is it might go red. Super looking coin !

Also...I am noticing - maybe it is the pictures- The strike is great..rims are very sharp , and the fields seem a little rough- Could this be a matte proof ? I am not real familiar with them , but I am curious.

The reverse looks almost totally brown to me and I even see some blue in them in the center of the coin and a little between the wheat stalks at the bottom center .

The obverse does not look full red in the pics but about 70/30 .

What you are seeing is flaws in my photography. I was experimenting once again with my lighting when I took these pics some weeks ago. Notice my white balance is off pretty bad, the coin in on white bond paper. Trust me, if you saw this coin in hand you'd say fully red.
