A really cool area of collecting would be ancients, either Greek or Roman or both. They have to be bought, but literally millions of them are inexpensive and the idea of holding something that's 2,000 years old in your hand is amazing. They would make a far more interesting collection than some boring cents, nickels or dimes. The idea of filling the holes in some coin album does not sound exciting to me.

I know this has been said many times already, but I'm very sorry about your nephew. I think the proof set is a great idea- I started collecting when I was 7, and soon after, my father gave me a silver proof set and ASE from my birth year, 2000, for Christmas. That certainly made my day. You could do a complete circulated date & MM set for 1902, minus gold- the only tough one would be the '02-S Morgan, but you could probably pick one up in G or VG for a decent price.
Jeff nickels wouldn't be too hard, as most can be found CRHing, or all if he's patient. Of course, LHC's or other common modern coins would work too.
Now here's an idea- buy him a box of Half Dollars, open a few rolls before hand, and slip some Seated Liberties, Barbers or Walkers in there.

It is amazing how cheap you can get an authentic silver coin from 2000 years ago.

Maybe instead of coin roll searching, you can pick up a lot of uncleaned ancients and clean them together.

Maybe an ancient of a movie character. Silver coins of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus from the movie Gladiator are pretty cheap.

Maybe an ancient of a famous historical figure like Alexander the Great. You can get a drachm of his for $50 or so no problem. Not bad for a silver coin from the BC era.

Don't think that budget will leave gold out of the mix. I recently picked up 2 1945 Mexico 2 Peso coins for $60 each cash out the door. A little smaller than a dime. Nice little piece of gold with next to zero premium above melt at retail.

Just build a time machine, travel to 2102, sell some coins from our time period to future collectors, and buy some nice BU rolls of whatever coins are made then.
