j_hewes Valued Member United States 52 Posts	Posted 06/13/2015 11:16 pm Good evening all, I just bought an 1816 Austrian 1 kreutzer which is counterstamped "F. E. VOIGD.". The other face is stamped "32 5th ST". A short trip through Google turned up the F E VOIGD counterstamp on other coins, but nowhere do I find any trace of who the good Mr. VOIGD might have been. The counterstamp appears to me to be by a store owner. Are there any references which discuss merchants' marks on coins? Just wondering... Report this Post to the Staff

Sap Moderator Australia 16912 Posts	Posted 06/14/2015 01:01 am I'd be surprised if "5th St" is a street in any Austrian city, or any European city for that matter - Streets in Europe are almost always named. It's only in "the colonies" that streets are routinely numbered. So I would assume that this was a foreign coin that someone in America found useful as an advertising token.
