I've just started a Dansco 7172. It is a dollars date set with one hole per year for all years of the Morgan, Peace, Ike and SBA series.

I'd like to keep the budget fairly reasonable. I can't put the rarest coin (or all CC) for each slot. But I would like to get some variety for each series and not just put the cheapest option in each slot.

So I was hoping maybe someone had some ideas of interesting coins I could use for some of the years and series. For example, the first one, 1878, maybe I use one of the 7/8 TF varieties. I'm thinking I make sure to do all types and finishes for the Ikes. Things like that.

Any ideas would be fun to hear.

Right now, all I can think of is the type 1 and type 2 SBA dollars. If you were completing a set of SBA dollars in the set of all the dollars too and you were doing all the type of strikes, then why not for 1979 S and 1981 S put the type two proofs? They are relatively cheap coins. I bit expensive for me though. This seams like a set with a lot of potential. Good luck with it!

What I'm doing at the moment (provided I don't get distracted again) is the Morgan 2 volume set in (well) circulated condition keying on list VAMS. (top100, Hot50, Hitlist40 and even the WOW list)

For the SBA I am just going to include every MM and a proof.
For the Ike, Since the cover says "Silver DOllar Date Set", I am going to use 40% coins in all the years they are available. Probably alternate between proof and BU

For the Peace and Morgans, I'm toying with the idea of showing a wide variety of grades to add some interest.

Congrats on starting a Dollar date set

I started mine a few years ago .. and ended up doing both
the date set and a full Morgan set.

Trying to figure out how to add some variety to your date
set could be difficult, depending on your budget for each
coin. If your budget is high enough, you could do some
Proof like Morgan's or even put a real proof in one of the
slots.

Dave's idea on putting some top VAM's sounds interesting.
I have thought about putting some time in, and seeing if
I could identify some of my VAM's.

For me ... I know I just like to get the holes filled,
then start the update process. May not be the best way,
but it is something I can't avoid.

I forgot to say, on mine I added a blank Sac page.
In that I continue on and add a SAC dollar for every year.

Also .. you got me thinking. For the Ike and SBA page
I am thinking of changing all mine to proofs.

I think it would make that page really pop.

Low grade CCs can definitely be found affordably, so definitely see if you can find at least one. In fact, lowball sets can be a lot of fun. F

or the SBA, I'd say get a nice '99 Proof or see if you can pick a wide rim - that's a fun challenge. Most people don't pay attention to SBAs, so picking high grade ms coins raw can be a lot of fun because unless they're really nice, they're not worth grading - yet. So you can find them inexpensive even if they're pretty nice.

Same with Ikes.

As for Peace, I'd say just take your time. Filling the hole isn't hard, but finding a decent MS Peace raw is certainly doable if you look in the right places!

Good luck, keep us apprised. Can't wait to see pictures as you go!

Excellent choice.

This album is on my future to-do list. I just have to finish what I started first.
