Hi I am new here and trying to find out the best way to sell a coin collection that I received when my grandfather died. Before anyone asks why would I sell a family collection, we did not communicate. not his fault or mine. I just did not know him so there is little sentimental value. I am keeping the silver but there is over 420 rolls of pennies dating back to 1919 with various mints. I am sure that these have not been searched through because a lot are in bank rolls. It sounds fun to search through the coins but I don't know what to look for. Does anyone have any info on how to sell these pennies where I can get what they are actually worth. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Joey, Welcome to the forum. You should check out some of the posts and start to learn about what those coins might be worth. Even if you decide not to collect coins yourself, you should still have an idea about their value. Also check out ebay to see what rolls of similar years have sold for recently. You may not have known your grandfather well, but what he left you sounds like a wonderful collection that took him years to build. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to be ripped off when you sell it. Everything here is very knowledgeable and friendly and will help you learn about what you have. I hope to check out some of your posts in the future.

As patrick said it'd be a good idea to try to learn about what you have so that you know how much you should sell them for. There is a forum on thorough coin community that you could use to sell your coins but you must have 50 posts and have been a member for at least two weeks. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=16

If you go to a coin shop to sell your coins, you will only get probably 50% of what they are worth. And thats if the dealer really doesn't want to screw you over. First, if the rolls are never opened uncirculated cents from the early 1900's, you may have yourself quite a treasure. If the rolls are ones you can easily open by just unfloding one end and let them all fall out, they are probably randome cents stored in paper rolls. Once your find out what dates and grades of coins you have you can then predict a rough estimate of what they are worth. If they are all worn and randome dates, a dealer would probably give you 2 cents for each Wheat cent. Maybe 50 cents a piece for indian head pennies. Photos would help. Tell us if they are all the same dates in each roll and what dates it is. Find out what condition they are. Or, if you don't want to deal with any of this, it would be a good idea to just put them in your basement tell you meet someone who knows something about coins. Ty

It seems that most of these coins are dull brownish color but seem to good as far as being to see detail? Should I clean these coins or not.

What years of pennies should I check first. The earliest I have is 1919 and I have at least one roll of every year up to 79 or 80. I know about the 55 double die. What else should I look for? some are steel but I have seen that those are not worth much. This forum is awesome. Thanks for all the help!

Please do not clean the coins ! that will ruin the collector value in them in a heart beat .
in fact until you know if they are circulated or Uncirculated they should be handled with gloves and then only by the edges ,,try not to let your fingers touch the surfaces ,,copper is highy reactive and finger prints are a very distracting factor when determining value .

Great question. And one that comes up quite often. Don't clean them unless you know what you're doing - and even then you probably shouldn't. Naturally colored coins are worth more than harshly cleaned ones. Do a search on "cleaning" using the box in the upper left of the window and see what others have said about this topic.

do any of the rolls have markings on them for what mint ? or can you see which mint on the end of the rolls ? other dates that carry high premiums are 22-D or if they are plain 1922's no mint mark all that much the better ,,1926-S 1931-D and S ,1936 has a doubled Die that may or may not be present on your coins ,,there are several dates with Over Mint marks that carry a significant premium,, and don't entirely count out the 43 steel cents high grade origianl cents carry a good value . 1960 small date ,and 1970 small date are all coins you should be aware of . but keep in mind that unopened OBW rolls of lincoln cents all carry a premium 3 to 10 X or more above face value ! Just in case you get the urge to open them up ,,the value will drop considerably even on the common date coins . Metalman

OK thanks no cleaning, and I have wrote down all the years and mint if it was wrote on the roll. I do not have any 22's, I have some 26's not sure what mint I have 5 rolls of 60D that are labeled small date, no 31 I guess I don't have every year. It looks like I have most years after 34. Thanks again I can see where this can get addictive.
