No....you can go to the bank and ask for .50 cent pieces in any amount you want provided they have some. As you search through them at your leisure....you may find silver ones or Fraklins, or whatever.

sometimes you won't find ANYTHING in your "batch" and other times you'll score with some silver or other pieces, but no, the bank will not give you a roll of Franklins......... that comes just from searching what you've purchased from them hoping to find some.

With half dollars not being very common you'd think the banks would go through the rolls they get and keep the silver ones to sell at a profit.

Very few tellers are aware of the silver in the half dollars. I've only come across one teller in all my years who knew about it and she would tell me they are already searched for silver. I'd still take the halves anyway, and amazingly, I still got a 40% silver piece in a batch. You do not get Franklins from the bank, only by exhaustive searching of Halves from the bank- you will occasionally come across a Franklin and even a Walking Liberty

It would be nice to ask a bank "do you have any Franklin halves?" "Sure do, let me get some for you." :P

Whenever I ask for any half dollars in my area they never have them. The only way is to order them by box which is $1000.00 or go out of my area.

A box is only $500 but I have heard of a $1000 minimum to order- usually because the teller thought halves came in $1000 boxes. I always order 2 boxes at a time minimum- its just as easy to get 2 as it is one. HH Mark

Only 500!
---- Yes "only" $500, but I think some people miss the bigger picture. You buy a box and have a few spare common (non-silver) halves. After going through and pulling out the silver ones, you backfill the rolls to bring them back up to $500. Take them back to the bank (preferably another branch) and cash them in. You dont lose anything, so there is no risk other than some of your time and a little money for gas to go get them and bring them back.
I plan on doing $1000 worth this week (should be ready for pickup tomorrow) so I will take $1K out of savings, go through the rolls, keep what I want and backfill the rest. The $1K goes back into saving this weekend.

Dimes, and quarters, $250.00 a throw. Half dollars, $500 bucks a box. My bank, (of A) won't order unless it is $1000.00, or two bixes. The vault teller does save all the halves that come in, and when I go in, she digs out a small envelope with my name on it, and I get the halves. If the banks didn't all reek with "hen-house ways", I would go to different banks for ths coins, but everyone has to have an account with the bank. NUTZ! Dick

This subject comes up repeatedly. If you go to the average, large bank while they are busy and ask for anything special, such as half dollars, they will usually tell you they doh't have them. In most banks that I have ever visited coins such as half dollars are in the main vault. If you go there while they are busy and a line is forming, such as request would hold up numersous individuals with real buisness. The reason is your teller would have to lock up everything, if authorized go to the main vault for your request, replace the rolls with currency, fill out a form, return to their station. Most people in line would want to kill you. Worse yet if the teller is not authorized to enter the main vault, they have to contact the person that is and now two people are held up for your request. And if your not a regular, important customer, forget it. You'll be told they don't have any. I get from 2 to 10 rolls of halves every time I go to a bank. Primarily I first try to find a time when they are basically empty.

I see alot of mention of asking the tellers, but every time I go to the bank they hardly have any. I havent asked yet for them to check the vault so that's why I went ahead and ordered 2 boxes of halves. Sure I will have to part with $1K temporarily but I will get that all back when I cash in the halves. The way I look at it, it's a numbers games and the more you acquire to search through, the better your odds. I would like to make this a weekly or bi-weekly thing eventually.

I dropped by two banks yesterday and asked them if they had any half dollars. A teller from each bank gave me what they had -- 15 from one bank and 10 from the other. All Kennedys. Nothing special.
I didn't request they check the vault.
