I have done some surfing around this site and I've discovered a few interesting things. The most interesting is that I don't know even a small fraction of what I thought I knew about coins(too much time has passed). But one thing that I hoped to learn is whether there is an online/catalog company selling coins with reliable ratings. I know that if I buy from a catalog then I am overpaying. Please excuse me for this. What I want to know is WHO IS RELIABLE? I know that as I learn more I can rely on my own judgment. That is fine. Right now I need to rely on anothers judgment. Who can you trust?

Welcome Firstly...what are you interested in buying? If' it's bullion then there are some really good companies to buy from online. If it's coins to fill holes in your collection then sometimes ebay is the best option for the price. Fell free to Always ask any questions before you buy.

Hi - I have some minor interest in bullion but at the moment I'm most interested in silver dollars. There are no coin shops nearby but mostly I'm concerned that I don't know enough about rating coins. If I buy on ebay (or anywhere for that matter) I'm worried that I'll overpay because I can't judge whether the rating is accurate. Should I just trust what I'm told? I've read a bit about the various organizations that rate coins and it seems that people generally trust their ratings. So that means I should only buy slabbed (is that the correct term?) coins until I develop my own rating skills? Thanks for your help.

Kizmet,
Welcome to the forum. Your questions are all legitimate and you will find they can all be answered by the forum members.
Buying slabbed coins is fine and it does give you some assurance that you are getting an authentic coin and for the most part an accurately graded coin. However this is not always the case. If you are going to purchase slabbed coins then I would recommend sticking with coins graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG. There are many sub standard grading companies that seem to consistently over grade coins.
If you haven't checked out the Third Party Grading Forum yet please do.
Ultimately you will want to learn how to properly grade the coins you are interested in. The Coin grading forum is great for that and there are Morgans Silver Dollars on there all the time to improve your grading skills.

Until you learn more, I'd buy only PCGS or NGC slabbed.
You can reference the serial number on the slab at PCGS website to verify authenticity. I'm don't know if tou can do this at NGC.

WELCOME. My opinion is if your familiar with what people think of a used car salesperson, that is how I look at on line coin dealers. Same with coin stores. There is always the exception but as a rule I suspect just not the best or most honest types of people. In the defense of a coin store though you must remember that each purchase and sale must have a profit margin sufficient enough to support the store, a family, a car, etc. So the deals there just can not be to great. As to on line dealers, with so many out there it is becoming more and more difficult to find decent dealers. They too are struggling with competition so their sales must reflect a larger profit or it is just not worth the trouble. Many make the postage, handling, restocking fees and insurances so high so they can make a profit there also. The question as to a possible list of on line dealers that are honest, trustworthy, reliable is sort of like asking which is the best car to buy, what is the best TV to buy, who should I marry, etc. You may get some suggestions and try them and find it just didn't work for you. If I worked for a dealer and saw this type of question asked, I would throw in my bosses name as the best place on Earth to buy a coin naturally. An as soon as he gets out of jail he will sell you anything you want.

One more thing though. As Metalman pointed out this forum is a pretty good place to find deals on coins. One reason is if a member burned you on a coin sale you would possibly blast them right here so not worth loosing a lot of customers and friends. Also, most members are coin collectors and not here to make a fortune on coin sales.

I suppose I have been very fortunate in that I have found a couple of dealers on the internet. I placed a fairly small order to see the quality and service. I can tell you that one in particular I have found to be extremely trustworthy--fair pricing and accurate grading. I don't know the ethics of telling you the dealer though. Perhaps someone here can tell me if it is proper to reveal the name of the dealer.

At NGC you can verify the serial/certification number as well.

I would definitely second what rohumpy said - when you find a dealer online that you think looks good, start small. Shipping can be a killer on small orders, so I like to buy a couple coins and then fill out the order with any supplies I've been needing. After a couple orders you get a much better sense of their grading standards. Also, here's another thread on CCF that had links to a ton of recommended sites. I found this very useful. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=17052

I like worknig with ebay just buy from trusted sellers. In selling, be honest and forthright with people becuase you'll need to build a good rating of your own. Good luck and keep us posted of good venues you find out there.
