NANTAN METEORITE (PARTIALLY GOLD-PLATED)Series:Country: Palau (not sure if this is a legal tender) Year: 2006 Meteorite: Nantan Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 / partially plated with Gold .999 Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 500 pcs Mint: Don't know (appears to be commissioned by reppa.de) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Came with all-German certificate of authenticity Notes:A mystery coin, if anyone has any additional info I would be glad to learn more about the coin. Specifically, the matter of whether this coin is indeed legal tender of Palau is not clear to me. 2015 Krause catalogue does not mention it, so I suspect it is just an alter, albeit a nice one. POPIGAI METEORITESeries: Crater Meteorites Country: Niue Year: 2016 (expected in February) Meteorite: Popigai Face value: 1 New Zealand Dollar Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 31.1 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 666 pcs Mint: Mint of Poland Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Wooden box, capsule and CoA Notes:For those who collect meteorite coins, here's a new stunning release in Meteorite Crater series by Niue! It's dedicated to the Popigai Crater that is located in northern Siberia, Russia at the edge of the polar ice cap. The coin is distinguished by its ultra-high relief with antique finish and a piece of real meteorite atop! Struck from 1 oz fine silver .999, it's one of those rare things - only 666 pieces worldwide! The obverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the inscriptions: the Queen's name, the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year. A piece of the real Popigai Meteorite is the centerpiece of the reverse making the coin a real treasure for those hunting for meteorites and unique coins. The reverse itself is a small replica of the Popigai crater. The real crater is tied with the Manicouagan Crater as the fourth largest verified impact crater on Earth. A large bolide impact created the 100 kilometres diameter crater approximately 35 million years ago during the late Eocene epoch (Priabonian stage). It is designated by UNESCO as a Geopark, a site of special geological heritage. The coin comes housed in a luxury wooden box with a certificate of authenticity also provided. Be one of the lucky 666 owners of the Popigai Meteorite Crater Coin and make your collection unique! SIKHOTE-ALIN METEORITESeries: Meteorite Art Country: Chad Year: 2016 (expected in February) Meteorite: Sikhote-Alin Face value: 5,000 Francs CFA Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 155.5 g Size: 60 mm Mintage: 500 pcs Mint: Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Wooden box, capsule and CoA Notes:A debut coin in Meteorite Art series, this innovative silver coin features a huge meteorite inset embedded into a 2,5 mm high relief! With a bit of genuine Sikhote-Alin and its impact site image on the reverse, it's the first coin in stunning series. The worldwide minage is up to 500 pieces worldwide. The obverse displays the coat of arms of Chad: a shield with wavy lines and the sun rising over it, supported by a goat and a lion. Below the shield, there is is a medal and a scroll with the national motto in French standing for "Unity, Work, Progress". The obverse background contains a landscape of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall occurred in eastern Siberia on February 12, 1947, and it's known as the largest witnessed meteorite shower in historical times. Since the meteorite entered the earth's atmosphere at a speed of 31 000 miles per hour, the impact could be felt a hundred miles away. Because the meteor fell during daytime, it was observed by many eyewitnesses. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite is classified as an iron meteorite that belongs to the chemical group IIAB and with a coarse ocraedrite structure. The piece embedded into this coin is whole and intact, and weighs about 3 grams. The coin comes housed in a luxury wooden box, accompanied by a CoA. Quote: sel_69l It would be my inclination to spend all of my money on a much larger and nicer example of a meteorite, rather than a combination presentation such as this.
Stashing bullion for those who are interested is lots of fun, and those who have a good collection of meteorites also have lots of fun. Much more value for money, fun and knowledge can be had if you keep those interests separate. Same also applies to faceted gemstones mounted in coins. Point well taken. And I would admit that keeping two separate would yield better investment value. And those people keen to think of this hobby as an "investment" should probably not consider these coins (just like any other coins, in my humble opinion, there are better instruments to invest in). From my own viewpoint, these coins have the same advantage as a well-made designer diamond engagement ring would have over a combination of a bar of white gold and a nice 5 karat loose diamond - the effort that went into crafting the piece together. If I learn anything else about modern coin making techniques, or about meteorites themselves in the process is just gravy; but I really try to appreciate those as pieces of art. Have to admit though - once on this path, I feel obliged to acquire every new piece coming up...

I expect to see some high prices for American coins with such low montages.
