Here's the companion to the 1866-R 2 Lire. This is a big 1870-R 5 Lire of Pius IX. It has very nice gold toning and sharp details. It's just about the same size as a U.S. silver dollar.

I just got a collection of world crowns today for appraisal and there were 6 numismatic forgeries of Vatican issues of Pius IX including 1 of the 1870 coins. The dies were very well made but the edge was applied incorrectly on some and of course in most cases the forgers forgot that the coin is dual dated - the year of the Papal reign on the obverse must relate properly to the date on the reverse. The 1870 did not. The weight was correct however.

I'm a bit concerned. The surface just seem odd in my opinion.

Can you please show us the edge of both coins?

I have to admit , I didn't think about this coin at all.

The texture of the obv and rev fields picture quite differently.
Obverse is more distinct than the reverse.

1. Check exactly for weight.

2. Check against other images of this coin to be found on the 'net.
Google Images is a good place to start.
Adjust for size and superimpose your coin over a different image of your choice, for comparison of details.

3. Examine your own coin closely all over, with a 10+ loupe.

4. Get it slabbed, even if you wish break it out later on.
Attach a note with your submission asking to ensure that it is genuine, before grading.

Thanks for the comments.

The weight is correct and the edges look fine. I'll try to get some photos and post them.

The date is Anno XXV, not XXI as antwerpen2306 posted.

The reverse toning is interesting, I'll say that.

I checked for known fakes before bidding. I saw several, but these had the wrong papal year on them. Here's one of them that I found with AN. VIII.

Paul - The 1870 with the Papal year VII is the same type that I received yesterday, except that mine has far superior toning with none of the tell-tale spots on the ebay coin. The coin is of course a mule of two dies that do not belong together.

Anyone interested in this series needs to copy these pictures and file them for future reference you will be seeing them again. When they get the dates right they will be difficult to spot.

When reading Papal dates you need to be aware that most will have two correct Papal years for each calendar year. That is simply because the Pope does not start his term in office on January 1.
