I will start off with the coin that has my affection forever - my very first meteorite coin. METEORITE HAH 280 Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2010 Meteorite: Hammadah al Hamra 280 (HAH 280) Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:The meteorite Hammadah al Hamra 280 (HAH 280) was found in the year 2000 in Jabal al Gharb in the Hammadah al Hamra region in Libya. 280 Stands for the number of catalogued meteorites found in this area. As a so-called carbonaceous chondrite the HAH 280 is classified in the very rare CK4 group. The scientific analysis confirms which are about 700 million years older than our 4,5 billion year old solar system. The meteorite HAH 280 originates from the so-called asteroid-belt. Today it is generally assumed that this belt arose from a primordial solar nebula. Researches have shown that in CK4 meteorites up to 220 amino acids exist. These provide the basis for the proteins, the components of the cells. Therefore speculations present themselves that possibly exactly such meteorites like the HAH 280 could have brought the basis for life on Earth! The coin's obverse depicts the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination. Source(s): http://www.coin-invest.li/Coins.asp...word=hah+280

BRENHAM PALLASITE METEORITE Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2007 Meteorite: Brenham Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925, partially palladium plated Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:In February 1886 Mrs. Eliza Kimberly found a strange black chunk of stone in the „Brenham Fields" in Kiowa, Kansas. She identified it as a meteorite straight away but could only let it be specified more precisely by a scientist several years later. It was a very rare meteorite - a pallasite. A pallasite is a stony-iron meteorite type. It was named after the German academic Peter Simon Pallas who first described this rare group of meteorites in the years 1772-1777. They are considered to be very beautiful and consist of about 50 percent iron-nickel and another 50 percent olivine. A small component of this famous Brenham Meteorite, which originated billions of years ago, has been set in this coin. To emphasise the particularity of this issue furthermore, the surface of this coin has selectively been treated with palladium. The untreated surfaces on the moon and the meteorites tail are a strong contrast to the remaining coin and give it a very special visual effect. PULTUSK METEORITE Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2008 Meteorite: Pultusk Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925, partially palladium plated Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:On January 30th, 1868 one could see an enormous ball of fire in the Polish sky which sped towards the earth. At seven o'clock in the evening an explosion took place and shortly afterwards stones rained from the sky in the surrounding of Pultusk which is about 65 km to the north of Warsaw. A huge meteorite detonated in the Earth's atmosphere and landed on a 120 km2 stretch of land. The meteorite of Pultusk is a so-called H5 chondrite. These contain spherical inclusions of minerals, the chondrules, which normally consist of olivine and pyroxene. The H stands for the high iron content of over 27.5 percent. The total weight of the located meteorite-find is estimated at just less than nine tons. The heaviest piece, which is about 9 kg, is exhibited in the British Museum of London. However, most of the thousands of pieces from the meteorites debris weigh less than 10 grams. Among experts such small finds are called "Pultusk-Peas". This Polish meteorite shower is among the biggest which has ever been sighted by humans and is certainly the most significant in Europe. However, fortunately no injuries or destructions are known of. Source(s): http://www.coin-invest.li/Coins.asp...roductID=364

400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OBSERVATION OF MARS Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2009 Meteorite: NWA 4925 Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925, copper-plated Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:Mars is an earth-like planet in our solar system. With a diameter of approximately 6800 kilometres it is about half the size of the earth. A high percentage of iron oxide (rust) is responsible for its reddish shimmer. Due to this (blood red) colour it was granted the Roman God of Wars name. Through its brightness it was already known in ancient days. The planet Mars was observed more precisely for the first time with Galileo Galilei's telescope. Up until today the fascination of this orb is unbowed. For the first time ever mars meteorite stone has been inserted in this coin edition. This stone belongs to the scarcest possessions a private persons can have. There are less than 100 kilograms of it worldwide. How is a specification of the meteorite possible at all? The earth probes on Mars, Voyager, Rover or Phoenix, have examined the Martian soil intensively. This geological data served as a basis for the allocation of its origin by which the meteorites were defined. Therefore it could precisely be determined that this meteorite NWA 4925 of the type olivine-phyric shergottite originates from Mars. Source(s): http://www.coin-invest.li/Coins.asp...roductID=404

MOON - 40TH & 50TH ANNIVERSARIESSeries: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2009 Meteorite: NWA 4881 Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 1,969 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:By launching the space probe Luna 3 on October 4, 1959 the Soviet Union initiated a new step for the footrace to the moon. With a small camera the space probe succeeded to take first photos of the earths averted side of the moon which no human being has ever seen before - „dark side of the moon". The pictures were of poor quality; however, the highlands and lowlands were clearly recognisable. The big dark „Mare Moscoviense" is, among others, also visible. However 10 years later the Americans succeeded to win the footrace. On July 21, 1969 at 3.56 o'clock CET, Neil Armstrong left the lunar module Apollo 11 and set foot on our next orb with the words „That's one small step for man, . one. giant leap for mankind! " In memory of this double anniversary the new silver coin shows both sides of the moon in incredible detail. Besides, on the reverse of this coin a real moonstone is inlaid; a piece of the Lunar meteorite NWA 4881. A Lunar meteorite is a meteorite that is known to have originated on the Moon. Lunar origin is established by comparing the mineralogy, the chemical composition, and the isotopic composition between meteorites and samples from the Moon collected by the Apollo missions. THE MUONIONALUSTA METEORITE Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2011 Meteorite: Muonionalusta Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 20 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:Meteorite showers, which fall toward the earth, occur daily. However, only some make it to the surface of our planet. Most of them disintegrate in the atmosphere. The discoveries of these meteorites are special on every occasion. By coincidence, two boys discovered this special meteorite from outer space in Muonionalusta, Sweden. The meteorite in question is the fine octahedrite class IVA. On closer inspection the texture of the surface catches one's eye first. The very technical looking structure is attained by an extremely slow cooling down from 1 to 100 degrees per million years - an unimaginably slow process. The Widmanstätten patterns, (also called Thomson structures) named after the Austrian natural scientist Alois Widmanstätten (1754-1849), are only visible when treated with nitric acid. These unique structures cannot be reproduced artificially and are, therefore, a clear identifying feature for meteorite iron. Due to these characteristics this meteorite is predestined to be immortalized on the latest coin edition of the Cook Islands. Source(s): http://www.coin-invest.li/Coins.asp...roductID=753

SEYMCHAN METEORITE Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2012 Meteorite: Seymchan Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 20 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:The Seymchan meteorite was found in 1967 in Seymchan which is in Eastern Siberia, Russia. The approximately 300 kg stone-iron meteorite was found in the river bed of the Hekandue river which flows into the river Yasachnaya. On a second expedition in 2004, which was also directed to the Seymchan, many new finds were discovered, in total about 50 kg. As the location of this Pallasite lies within the Arctic circle, it is very difficult to access. This rarity is usually only accessible to scientific purposes. Today the main mass of this meteorite is in the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The Seymchan Meteorite is characterized by a beautiful combination of Thomson structures and Neumann lines as well as a mixture of Silicate minerals. CHELYABINSK METEORITE Series: Stardust of the Universe Country: Cook Islands Year: 2013 Meteorite: Chelyabinsk Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 20 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 2,500 pcs Mint: Coin Invest Trust (CIT) Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a themed tin box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:On February 15th, 2013 at about 9:20 am local time, a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk in the Russian Ural region. NASA estimated it to be the largest meteor since 1908. The large number of injuries is also unique; 1200 people were injured, more than 1100 by broken glass from shattered windows. The diameter of the meteor was 17 metres and its mass about 10'000 tons. The celestial body entered the Earth's atmosphere travelling at a velocity of 18 kilometers per second. The kinetic energy was equivalent to 500 kilotons of TNT which amounts to the energy released from 33 atomic bombs as detonated at Hiroshima. The air burst and the following shock wave resulted in 200'000 square metres of broken windows and damage to about 4000 homes. According to press releases a fragment of the meteorite hit lake Tschebarkul near the town of Chelyabinsk, tearing a hole of about six metres in diameter in the ice sheet. With this coin you experience the explosion through the eyes of the inhabitants of Chelyabinsk. Broken window panes and the passing meteoroid trail in the sky. For once a very different perspective for a commemorative coin. Source(s): http://www.coin-invest.li/Coins.asp...oductID=1021

Wow- this is just fascinating. I've never heard of a piece of meteorite set in a coin, but I guess there's a first time for everything. It seems like the Cook Islands always produce some of the most unique commemoratives.
Great work on this collection, and keep it going!

This has been a very interesting topic. Great information and wonderful pictures, I've never seen these coins before. The first coin is stunning, do you have an in hand photo. It certainly could be a nice collection on its own with 35 coins.
