I heard talk over the weekend of the abolishment of the $1 bill. It was sadi that this was being considered because of the outrageous number of $1 coins slated to be minted and the fact that they are not being circulated. While this seems logical, I am not sure it will happen. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

It has been in discussion since 1979 when the Susan B dollar was released .

So far the coins have not caught on .

and as far as I am concerned personally I'm pretty happy about that .I don't care for the dollar coin and think I should have a choice which I use .

Works in other countries don't see why we can't do it also. Though we're almost completely plastic so I don't think it matters too much about catching on. It's just a matter of them saying "hey, this is the way it is... deal with it. Oh, and Pluto isn't a planet anymore either...sorry"

Could be interesting. It would certainly give a few people some jobs. Just think of all the workers needed to manufacture new vending machines lol

The us goverment will not stop making one dollar bills after I read it on there website. Its waste of tax payer money to make them things it seems on halfs, dollar coins, two dollar bills .

Its mess with dollar coins and half dollars , two dollars bills I learned. Banks dont want them or want to ordor them. They just sit in vaults unused for years in federal banks all the time. I ordor that stuff from banks all time and finds tons of brand new unc old half dollars in those boxs and last week I got an 2003 block of two dollars bills that are all brand new never used that were printed in oct 2003. It sat in Federal bank for over 4 years before I got it.

I needed to pay taxs on my house and was going toss than that unused block of two dollar bills in to my bank to pay my taxs. The head bank teller did not even want me to give to her to put in my account where I can pay my taxs. She told me take back bank I bought from it from since they cant get rid of it and would need to send back to feds since nobody wants them or dollar or half dollar coins. I may sell my block of two dollars bills on ebay or try to dump at the court house to pay my taxs this year on my house. Let the court house deal it with or there banks deal with it since my bank dont want deal with it.

I asked my other bank on dollar coins since I wanted an roll of them for search and use as spending money. The bank teller told me he sent an bag to back to federal reserve bank since nobody wanted them. I never did get an roll of dollar coins that day.

What an waste of tax payer money to make dollar coins, half dollars, two dollar bills. They all pile in up at Federal banks or trucking companys coin depot for years. It happened before in 2002 when they quit selling 2002 sac dollars and jfk half dollars to banks. Reason noboby wanted them and had an large stockpile of unused coins and two dollar bills that were turned back in.

If they keep making tons of brand new dollar coins like they did in 2007 there will be pallets full of them in coin depots and federal banks collecting dust for years like they did with the morgon silver dollar and Peace dollar back in the old days. It took them into 1970 or 1980 something to sell out on all 1934 and below Peace dollars and 1879 thru 1921 morgon dollars after reading about it on the history channel or someplace.

They would be still there if silver never became an expensive metal bullion like in 1960 something. I dont ever see those new copper clads ever becoming worth anything like silver did with the old coins. I see it in year 2068 the federal goverment will have stock piles full of 1979 susans, 71 thru 2001 unc halfs, 2000 sacs and 2007 brand new dollar coins collecting dust in the federal banks just doing nothing but collecting dust like the morgon and Peace dollar were in 1970 somthing.

Ow well its sounds like the goverment will keep wasting billions of dollars intill they can convince the public to quit using the paper dollars. It may never happen in my lifetime since the public always rejected those things for whatever reason.

I think one of the biggest problems is the banks dont want to deal with using a dollar coin or the half dollar, and the two dollar bills. If they just started handing them out everyone would have to start using them and I think not everyone know these items are still being made because no one hardly ever see's them

If they went to a dollar coin, it would have to be a large dollar...the SBA was such a huge failure, in part, because it looked just like a quarter. It needs to be a different, unique size in order to succeed. And yes, I'm aware that all of out paper bills look the same and we need to inspect them to determine the denomination. However, we've been doing that our entire lives so it's second nature. It's not second nature with coins.

Personally, I would HATE to go to a dollar coin simply because carrying change is a pain in the butt. It's a lot more convenient to pull out a lightweight dollar bill than it is to sift through tons of heavy change.

I wouldn't mind the demise of the dollar bill. I think a radical new design would help the coined dollar be more effective. Maybe something 8-sided or a thicker planchet.

I wouldn't mind the demise of all of our paper money as we know it today. We have the ugliest paper money. It needs a complete redesign in my opinion. But if the we where to go to a 1 dollar coin instead of a paper dollar. I think it it should be the size of the Morgan dollars.

The only way a $1 coin will work is if we get rid of the paper dollar. People are creatures of habit and will not change unless forced. I am all for getting rid of the paper bill.

Actually, the biggest complainers about the SBA were the vending machine companies. They were refusing to retool their machines to take the coins. Period. If they would have bit the bullet I think things would have been different.

But, strangely enough, Bally Pinball machines at one time did accept SBAs. You could even get an extra game for using them! :D

I read once that the push to get rid of the paper dollar was one of economics. a paper bill lasts approximately 16 months average a coin up to fifty years you do the math.

I"ve said this many times before. Don't worry about the abolishment of any coins or currency. They will all be gone soon enough. The future is a no cash monitary system. Haven't you seen those Visa commercials about how smootly everything goes until someone attempts to pay in cash or a check? Soon enough all transactions everywhere will be plastic cards. Even now you can see it everywhere. Gas stations, department stores, garages, airports and you can't even rent a car without a credit card. The constant intercontinental transactions will soon enough render any one country monitary system obsolete. Europe has started with one monitary system but that too will soon enough be outdated.
So save all your money since it will all be outdated soon enough.
I still say someday soon a kid will be saying "Hey gramps, what was that stuff you people used to use in the old days called money?"
Rest in Peace

Dockwalliper is right.

It's all politics and has to do with a paper money manufacturer in Massachusetts.

Sure, the Government could be saving millions of our tax dollars, but big business rules.
