So yesterday I walked into a local Pawn and they had a bunch of Morgans in a sheet in 2x2s. I picked out a few nicer ones and got home with them. When I was showing them to wife and trying to justify them I realized that I had not even bothered to check the reverse of the 1879 S. Well, you know how it usually goes check for rare variety and get the common one.
Not this time.
I had the reverse of 78 variety. Go ME!
Now, due to over-excitement I cannot seem to see straight (figuratively) as far as the grade. I keep (wishfully) thinking MS63, but I doubt you will all agree with that!
What would you all grade it? Worth TPG worthy? Are there any VAMs I should be looking for? And Lastly, Is anyone out there happy for me? I got this for $23
Thanks.

I'm thinking AU58 based on these images. As for the VAM, it looks like a partial r serif so begin with VAM9 in the attached link. http://www.vamworld.com/1879s+rev+78

Oh, and any 79-S rev 78 would be a good buy for $23 but one in this condition is crazy. Congrats!

The others I got were more or less the same condition.
1880 S
1882 S
1897 S
Each for $23
Also a totally black 1879 S (3rd reverse) in XF detail. for $21
I couldnt help myself from buying that one, it was too weird to not take.
Rest in Peace

Congratulations! Nice AU-58 so very close to MS. Wonderful pick ups. I remember when you were crazy for paying this much for a Morgan, and I remember when you were crazy not to pay double this. For right now, low $20's are absolute steals. Especially considering that the cost of a ASE isn't much different.

From what I find, pawns are either ridiculously over or under priced. They generally know nothing about the items they are selling and could never know the difference between an 1879 P, S, O or CC unless someone showed them. Much less a variety within one mint.

If that isn't MS, it's about as close as you could get!

Not a mint state coin to me. AU58 at best. There could be a whole bunch of VAM's on this date and reverse.
