I have a handful of nickels between 46 and 61. I know the only silver nickels are from the war mintage but this hand full of nickels just don't sound right. You know how silver quarters and dimes sound different, well these nickels don't sound like a hand full of more modern nickels. What am I hearing?

They are 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Most other silver coinage in the US is 90% silver.

How do I know, CCF tells me.

Check out the left hand column.

Go to the section ' US coins & Currency'.

Click on 'US Coin Facts'.

There you will find basic information on all US coinage.

Tons of great info in that left hand column.

The "35% silver" only refers to the wartime silver nickels.

Sound (ring test) is not a real good test. Too many variables. Alloy, persons hearing, potential for cracks or internal voids inside the planchet, etc. Specific gravity is a better test.
Rest in Peace

Might I ask why you are doing a ring test on Jefferson's dated from 46 up?

Other than the 1942-45 war issues, nickels have had the exact same composition since 1866.

The only way you learn is if you ask. Good question.
