I always thought that the Sanfrancisco mint was the only mint that made a silver coin. Is that true or can you get silver from different mints. I have a silver quarter with a Delaware mint mark.

what year are you referring to? because all quarters, and dimes were silver before 1965, and half dollars before 1971

I beleive you are confusing the "D", with the Denver mint.

I got a stupid question on Silver Quarters too, not that there are stupid questions. . . . How come the mintages for the US State Silver Proof Quarters are listed as the same as the rest of the proof set yet we have just the quarters only sets available from the mint? Shouldn't there be more quarters in that case? CCF lists them as the same as does RedBook.

Silver quarters minted 1992 to date (2016) were/are only made in San Francisco and have a "S" mint mark.
Business strike quarters dated 1968 to date, are clad quarters, made at Philadelphia and Denver mints.
If you have a "D" mint quarter, that is dated post 1964 and looks silver, there is a good chance it is plated.

Buckeye I would have to see your example. I just looked up 2005 silver quarters, which is the first year they made silver proof quarter set that is separate from the complete silver proof set. The mintage listed in the RedBook, for silver 2005 proof quarters is the combined total mintage of both sets.

I don't have my RedBook with me so I can't cite it at the moment, but I have looked at this before and noticed the error there. On CCF in the US Coin Facts section for Halves and Quarters for 2005 it lists the mintage of the silver quarters and the silver halves as the same. If they sold the quarters as stand alone mint sets, I would expect them to have a higher mintage yet they do not. I see 1,069,679 mintage for both silver proof quarters and halves in 2005 on CCF. It seems to be an issue with all the silver proof State Quarters. I see the same issue for years after that where we have data. Maybe my RedBook is dated and it is fixed now as it is a 2013 copy, but I can't find data on how many of the silver proof State Quarter sets were sold. It just doesn't make sense that they would be the same mintage as the halves.

This discussion goes nowhere without proof of a silver D mint mark silver quarter after 1964. Denver never makes silver quarter after 1964. There is no chance that Denver get the silver proof planclet to wrongly strike on.

Buckeye I am not wanting to highjack this thread, we are waiting for the op to post more information about his quarter. You can start another thread about the mintage issue. As far as the 2005 silver proof quarters, the number 1,069,679 is not correct. My 2012 RedBook does have the right numbers. There was another 6xx,xxx plus silver quarter sets sold.
