That awful day ; I arrived at work to be informed by a fellow engineer that they had "lost the shuttle". Lost ? In space ? What ? Couldn't get it through my head for that awful second. Many of us thought at the time that the inclusion of Christa was a publicity stunt by a NASA declining in public support that should never have transpired ; i.e. she should not have been aboard that spacecraft. The rest of the mission errors are well documented ; those doomed the other six trained astronauts.

Yes, a truly awful day. But everyone, beginning with the Mercury Astronauts up to the Shuttle, knew exactly what they were doing. A profession suitable for a select few.

I don't think that the civilian aboard that crew understood the gravity of the situation compared to the highly trained mission specialists and commander. Her profession was teaching elementary school.

What led you to that preposterous conclusion?

While the full time astronauts may have been more aware of all of the billions of things that could have gone wrong, they were all aware of just how serious going to space is especially when you're sitting on what is essentially a giant bomb on the way up. No one goes to space without months of training first.

That said I still stand by that it should be the whole crew (whether as one or all individually) or none at all.

I would definitely be more appreciative of a Challenger 7 commemorative.

We could have done both though. A silver one dollar honouring the complete Challenger crew and a clad half dollar commemorating the milestones of Christa McAuliffe being a part of that crew. Would be nice to also have a two coin set with educational information like we had on the Apollo half dollar set last year.

I'd be fine with that, would be nice not to have the same design on all three versions like usual too.

Exactly the goal I had in mind. If the Mint wants to sell more coins, they have to make more effort.

Getting rid of the design selection committee would be a great first step.

Why not go for a "Lost in Space" set : Apollo 1, Challenger, Columbia. 17 persons, 3 missions, 3 vehicles : 23 representations x 3 denominations (69 coins) in each of the following : BU, Proof, Reverse Proof, Matte Proof, Enhanced special, and a finish yet to be determined. (6 x 69 = 414) A neat 414 coin set contained in multiple package formats and as singles. Then, all finishes listed in silver versions. Now 818 coins. Sarcastic ? Of course. But I hope the idea doesn't get back to anyone who could sponsor it.
