Not a coin collector, but I ran across this silver colored 1964 penny, weight of 3.1g - not a single bit of copper look to it. Does not stick to a magnet, not extremely worn. Is this rare, mercury coated or a science experiment?

science experiment or sales gimmick. I highly doubt mercury, perhaps a coating of zinc

Plated, could be zinc, silver, nickel (Although if nickel it should be slightly magnetic), chome, but doesn't appear shiny enough, or any one of several other silver colored metals.

These were not uncommon when I was a kid, but I haven't seen one in a long time.
