First of all I dont know how to post pictures but I got a penny today ,it's still bright and new looking its a 197 D with the last number missing.Is there a lot of these floting around?

Yes. Either your coin was damaged by a counting machine which scraped the number off the coin, or your coin was struck through a plug of grease which blocked the number when the coin was struck. Either way they are rather common.
