Something I found today at a local dealer (not cherrypicked :

Lincoln-1970-S-SD

Something I've seen many 70-S SD are abundant die scratches. Despite the photo above, most of those marks are on the holder and not the coin. The photo isn't close to accurately capturing the coin--I need to find a better way to shoot bright copper!

I found interesting how the date gets stronger to the right--perhaps due to excessive die polish/wear?

Lincoln-1970-S-SD

Nobody ever shows the reverse of a 70-S SD, but I thought this one is nicely struck:

Very Nice! Is that also an RPM?

Thanks! I'm guessing it's just the lighting. Under a scope, I don't see anything unusual.

Great coin, Kurt. If you don't mind, what did your dealer charge you?

That is from a worn punch. If it were a RPM, then all 1970-S small dates would be RPMs as they come from just one die in thousands made that year. Very nice coin KirtS. Could I use your image for educational; purposes?

Very neat coin and great pictures. I'm curious to know as well how much the dealer charged for it.

Coop, sure you're welcome to use any photos.
It's a very nice coin but the photos don't really represent the obverse well. Jim--I got it for $50.

And, I did not know there was only one die for the 70-S SD. That does explain the rarity, and I'm sure the die states are well-documented for this variety. The last BU coin I looked at had a lot of deep die scratches from what I'd guess was polishing. This particular coin has very few--one is visible just W E of Lincoln's forehead.

I believe there was more than one single die used for the 1970S SD business strike cents. There were at least three dies used for the proofs, probably quite a few more.
