So I inherited a lot of coins when my great uncle passed. In those coins was a book of V nickels. The 1883-1912 book. Of course there first thing I look for is 1912-s ... Not there... but besides that every coin is in its correct spot.. So I get very excited as I see the 1885 spot is occupied! (I went backwards from 1912-s spot). Only thing is the date is unlegable. If you move it at the right light angel you can see 1...8...8... No 5. My question is would something like nic-a-date help retrieve the date? I took it to a coin shop. A very trustworthy one, and he was unable to see either. Would grading help in this situation? I really want to get the date back because its worth 1.00 at most without a readable date... Arggg! Help!

nic-a-date might help, but may also reduce its value. Wait for the experts to respond.

Oh ya I know but its worth almost nothing being unreadable... Is nic-a-date just temporary? If so how long?

nic-a-date is permanent. Its basically treating the coin with acid.

Can you post a few pics of the date. Some times you can make out a date in a pic that you can't with the naked eye. John1

Welcome to the CCF.
At some time or another, many a collector has been known to take some coin with an unreadable date and plug a pesky album hole with it. Personally, I'd not get my hopes up too high that the nickel is actually dated 1885. IMHO, there's no harm in doing an acid test to lift the date on such a coin. Some collectors seem to have good results with lemon juice or a similar substitute.

Would be nice to see pictures
And I agree with out knowing the date .. the coin is just face value.
Nick a date and white vining are can bring out the date ... but should be done as a last resort, there is no going back once you use them.

You know what; you don't even have to show us the reverse . We know what it will look like . Go ahead and use the acid of your choice .

How does using nic-a-date "reduce the value" of an otherwise worthless coin ?

We need closer pictures of the date. Sometimes, as with a lot of 19th C coins, the date is identifiable without all four digits.

Option 1. Send to TPS. Possible results; Best: P01 1885 Value aprox. $100 expense aprox.$30 Worse any other year Value 0 expense Apro $30
Option 2. Treat with acid to reveal date Possible results, Best; 1885 P01 details worth aprox $30 expense $.02 worst; Any other date value $0 cost $.02
So you must decide which option has the higher expected positive value
