Yesterday I accompanied my granddaughter on her first visit to a coin store. She is seven years old. I thought her head was going to spin off she was looking around at everything so fast. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful, thank you for making this a special event for her. She loved the coins but she was especially interested in the currency on display. After the visit we had the following conversation. GF: what was your favorite thing? GD: the big dollar bill. GF: the one hundred trillion dollar bill? GD: yes! GF: what could you buy with one hundred trillion dollars? GD: (without hesitation) 20 cars, plenty of food, some bedtime stuff and books. These are the very first collector coins she has bought with her own money, enjoy.

This is great. I can't wait till my son is old enough to go. It will be awhile as he is just turning 1. I really like that bus token she picked out. It is neat looking.

Oldephriam, your grandfatherly experience provides a lesson for many of us collectors to heed: we must expose young people to the rewarding hobby!
I have a friend nearly 80 years old who has never even shown or discussed his coin collection with any of his five grand children. He works on the collection in the complete privacy of his cellar, and keeps it locked up when he is not accessing the coins. He says the kids are not interested. Little wonder. What a shame.

My Grandpa taught me how to look for silver and wheat pennies at about that age, and it paid off!

Nice story, Oldephriam. Thanks for sharing. For those who haven't seen it, here's the Zimbabwe one hundred trillion dollar note. I bought a handful of these in the $2 to $4 range a few years back, and they're still plentiful:

Oldephriam! Quote: I bought a handful of these in the $2 to $4 range a few years back, and they're still plentiful Plentiful, yes, but you'll pay a heck of a lot more than $4 these days. Probably 20-25x that. I spent about $20 for mine a few years ago.

Great story. I gave my son a very nice complete LWC collection when he graduated from college ten years ago, which he indicated the other day that he "put away and hasn't looked at since." Shoulda thought that one through.

Did you tell your granddaughter that the 100 Trillion dollar bill could not buy nearly as much as she thought?
