Yeah, the photos are a little fuzzy. You might want to try again.
Also, the mods might move your post to US Classic Coin Grading.

The lighting angle doesn't show up the word LIBERTY very well which limits a guy from making an accurate grading determination. From what I'm seeing in the photo, the coin is at least a F-12, but if I had the coin in hand or saw better photos, it might go VF-20. Coin photography is not easy. When I first started posting here, my photos looked WAY worse than yours. But, with time and practice and experimentation--I eventually got better (maybe not great, but at least adequate for posting).  |

All letters of LIBERTY are at least partially visible so F-12 at least. Color looks OK except for that area at OF AM on the obverse; looks like somebody rubbed with an eraser there. You didn't ask for a value but the 1897 is a pretty common date. Problem-free Indian cents in similar grade are routinely available for maybe $3 at my local coin shop. If you are a fan of these coins you can assemble a pleasing partial set of late dates with a very modest budget. Edited by Jaobler

Technically F-12 but the cheek has a pretty bad hit so I'd say VG-10 or so net.

The pictures are a very pixellated and hard to make out details, but I'll stick my neck out here... When I take a closer look, I see strong separation between the hair and ribbon, and maybe even some diamonds preserved--not seen in F. So just for fun, I'm going to guess the coin is closer to EF details.  But good pics are better than guesses.  Edited by Thulium
