The xf40 has far better eye appeal in my opinion. I think the grades are generally accurate. The 35 is a little bit of a weaker strike I think but has some luster in a few spots so that helps it get to 35. The 40 has some really nice detail showing on the obverse - the star points still show separation for example - but lacks enough detail on the reverse and luster overall to keep it from getting into AU territory.

I would go with the 40. I probably wouldn't buy the 35 unless it was a great bargain - don't care for the dark toning and looks like it has a lot of hits on the fields.

I think the second one is overgraded.

Take a look at this one. You may like it better than either of these two.

The first has chippy surfaces, especially on the reverse, which probably explains the VF-35 when it looks like it should have gotten a 40. The second on would have been a VF-35 or even a 30 in the good old days."

I liked the 1838 you posted in the other post that most thought was a VF30 better than either of these two unless you are specifically going for a certain grade or certified example.

Thanks everyone.

Type- I'm trying to get a coin with a darker patina. I just find them more aesthetically pleasing.

KenKat- that one is a little overpriced. The seller wants $230 for it; it's a great coin but I don't want to overpay for a coin I could get in a higher grade

Agree, $230 is too steep for the 1838 in the other thread.
