This is a genre with which I'm not at all familiar. This duo turned up at a local coin club show today, and I was just too intrigued by them not to pick them up. It seemed to me that they were probably in better condition than that in which you might normally find such.

The seller believed the specimen on the right to be a contemporary counterfeit, but couldn't explain cogently just why he thought so. It certainly has a die crack that centrally traverses the entire obverse.

Both have edge legends that read, "PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LONDON OR BRISTOL".

I'll be doing some research on these (if nothing else to try and date the one on the left) but in the meantime, I'm all ears here.

These are Conder Tokens. They are old, I find them interesting and have a few myself.

I did a little research, and found this biography for John Howard (who died in early 1790):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_...on_reformer)

I think the reverse displays an engraver's error - it makes much more sense if the word "GOAL" should in fact be "GAOL".

Nope, GOAL was actually the correct contemporary spelling.
