What protection does the ebay shipping afford the seller? I had a purchase make it to an en-route city, then for a week no movement. I notified eBay/seller through their response tool. In a week I had a refund from the seller which came as a surprise. I thought once the USPS picked it up and scanned it, the seller was safe. Coin arrived in another 5 days. I've contacted the seller about paying him again as he refunded my purchase. Now I'm wondering how safe ebay shipping is without insurance. Thoughts / experiences? |

 It's the unfortunate truth. Thankfully, though, I have never been burned as a buyer or seller (unless you count selling a pricey coin for next to nothing. Ive done that several times  ) Edited by ChildOfTheWheat

COTW - but think of all the bargoons you've acquired. Thanks for the info. I do appreciate it. Sumpthin' to think about when selling. I've been on ebay for 20 years this August, and it changes so often that I still can't keep up. |

Seller is only safe if it is sent insured.

I'll be posting in the e-selling subforum later tonight, but right now I'm being shafted on a piece of software to the tune of roughly a hundred bucks. Through my communication with ebay, they have just urged me to accept a refund even though buyer's claim that the item "doesn't work or is defective" is proven horse manure, per communication with the software publisher. |

my ebay coin deal days are done. as a buyer, you are at the complete mercy from ebay, paypal and any ground delivery services, such as dhl, fedex, etc. the fact is that once the records show that the item has been delivered, you are on your own... even if you never got the item. I called ups on one such incident, that I never got the item even tho they showed it as delivered, and I asked UPS if they could get ahold of the driver who could show me where he dropped the item off at. UPS laughed at me AND THEN HUNG UP! the only safe way to get your coins is to go through the POST OFFICE, REQUIRING A SIGNATURE TO PICK THE ITEM UP, plus insuring the coins. if you go through fedex or ups, they will just as likely leave your item (as has happened with me several times) on the doorstep of a neighbor or somebody in the area. serious! I have had to literally chase after the UPS and FEDEX trucks as they entered my property to deliver very expensive coins. other times, since my neighbor is honest, he called to let me know I had a package, or, I just went over the neighboring houses only to find my package was dumped on their doorstep or driveway. ONLY GO through THE POST OFFICE, INSURED, REGISTERED/CERTIFIED, REQUIRING A SIGNATURE TO PICK IT UP. otherwise, your "buyer" is going to claim they never got your $4,000 coin... AND WIN! they end up getting the coin for free, plus the insurance money and there is NOTHING you can do about it or be compensated for! mike mike |

I've sold hundreds of items on ebay with no issues at all. I would not sell items on ebay that cost several thousand dollars however. Buyers can find a way to steal if they are set on committing a crime. There are risks like anything else in life. |

on the most valuable coin I ever bought, the seller would only ship through fedex. I was nervous as a cat that just got water thrown on it. I kept a hawkeye on both tracking and the entrance to my property. sure enough, even tho I WROTE ON THE PACKAGE VERY SPECIFIC DIRECTION TO MY HOUSE, the truck trundled off IN THE WRONG DIRECTION TO ANOTHER HOUSE ON THE PROPERTY. I took off at a dead run after the truck and caught up to it. I told the driver that directions to my home was on the box. her response? "oh, I never look at the packages... just the computer". what I am saying is that if you are not extremely careful, your "buyer" may not only complain they never received the coin, but also collect on the insurance. then they get to leave you negative feedback, adding insult to injury. and you get to leave them NO negative feedback, informing other sellers what kind of "buyer" they are. my ebay coin selling days are over forever. I have only attempted to sell a few, but from now on I will go through great collections to auction off my coins. cheaper fees and better clientel. mike |

As a seller I use ebay shipping which comes with a tracking number. I once had a package shipped to a U.S. buyer that showed it was delivered. The buyer said he didn't get it. ebay did end up siding with me since USPS tracking showed it was delivered. On the other hand, I've had two packages sent overseas (to China and Japan) that ended up not arriving. On those I refunded the money to the buyer since USPS tracking isn't always good once the package leaves the U.S. If it's an expensive coin shipped overseas I let the buyer know it's best to ship it registered. I have had a lot of problems with first class packages that never got there. If you sell an item for $23 and have $18 into it, it makes no sense to buy the insurance. There are thief at the post office. Priority mail is better.
