Well...here are some improved pictures. The coin is a bit porous, and a bit dark, but what do you expect from a copper coin minted 221 years ago! This is now the oldest American coin in my collection. Edited by hunter20ga 04/17/2008 9:22 pm

that's nice, and really not in bad shape considering the age. I would be happy with a coin in that condition

Nice coin, I'm thinking about getting into some older US coins. I think this one looks great for being 221 years old. It's color gives it that authentic feel.

And I wonder if that was one of the earliest coins with an eagle and shield? This was struck before the coinage act and the first mint in Philadelphia. Great coin! The color is very similar to my 1802 draped bust cent.

This is one of those cases where the coin looks much nicer in hand. I'm happy with it. This was minted the year the original colonies ratified the new Constitution and moved away from the failed Articles of Confederation. It could have spent time in John Adams' pocket!

Great coin. There's just something way cool about US coins from that time period.

Hi, eaglefoot. I'm sure the more conservative among the forum members will think I got taken, but I paid just a little bit under $200 for this particular coin. It's a type coin for me, and not one I would ever consider selling short of total financial collapse, so my goal was to find one with decent eye appeal at a price I could afford. You don't run across these in every coin store, though if you can attend larger shows you can find similar coins, I'm sure. As I said earlier, the coin has much better appearance in hand than in my photos. Sometimes digital photography and 1:1 macro do no favors to the appearance of a coin! I may try again this evening to get better pics. My laptop monitor at home shows these photos pretty well, though my monitor at work doesn't.

Outstanding piece. One of those cases where heavy circulation just adds to a coin's character. quote: I'm sure the more conservative among the forum members will think I got taken
I don't think that there is a collector out there who hasn't overpaid for a coin that they really liked at least once in their life.

If they haven't they don't have enough passion for their coins. I know I have paid too much, several times. And I'd do it again.

Probably not. It sure would be boring if collecting was a business! However, given the option I'll gladly underpay for a coin I really like....that's collecting too

I have no idea what it is worth, but I think you got more than your money's worth. I know nothing about colonials but I love this design. The lettering of Massachusetts is very nice and I think the eagle's legs are tremendous -- it looks like he's sitting on his haunches! Also, the Indian on the reverse looks like he's wearing boots like Robin Hood (not sure what they're called). Enjoy your find.

Yeah, Groganking...that eagle's legs are a bit skinny and he looks as though he's doing squats! I do wish there was a bit more detail on the Indian. I think his long bow is a great touch. It is, overall, an appealing design. Very interesting that even at that time, as a culture, we apparently valued the native American's valor, bravery and skill at the same time we were in conflict over land and culture. The collision of civilizations is often messy (to understate it badly.)
