chevelle I was happy to answer your question about Colonel Green and provide a link to a source in case you wanted to read more about him than my brief summary.

Never hesitate to ask a question or for more information, there are plenty of members here willing to do their best to share what he or she knows.

A few things about Colonel Green. The Colonel title was not from the military service. He was given the title from the Governor of Texas as an honorary Colonel.

In 1905 he organized the first 100 mile cross country car race. There were 5 cars and he was the driver of one of the cars. He won the race and set a record time for 100 miles at 2 hours and 6 minutes.

He walked in to a coin store and asked to see some gold coins. The dealer brought out a tray of his best gold coins. Green sit down and examined the coins and asked the dealer how much for all them. The dealer named his price, and Green did not haggle over the price and said, I will take them all.

Lots of interesting stories about EHR Green. The one that stands out to me was the one about how his mom, the miser Hettie Green tried to take Ned to a free clinic for the poor when he broke his leg. She was recognized and was made to pay. Ned eventually had to have his leg amputated. We will never know whether Hettie, withholding care that she could easily afford, cost her son his leg. He could have seen the best doctors of the day, but her mother's stinginess kept that from happening.

I have a book about "Ned" Green. He had a large estate near New Bedford, MA.
One of the many, many things he did was to save the last wooden whaling ship.
The Charles Morgan is now at Mystic Seaport.

Very interesting post numismatic_student. Thanks for asking the question chevelle7167. I learned something as well. A wealth of knowledge to be had here at CCF for free. Mrs. Hettie Green would have enjoyed the free part.
