For one thing that toning throws up a red flag for me. Other's with much experience on Morgans will chime in a bout the coin itself.

I read that the 1889 cc Morgan dollar was one of the most conterfeited US coin. I didn't see the 1879 cc Morgan dollar on there but maybe didn't look far enough.

To the best of my knowledge, that mint mark location (high, shifted well right, tilted left) is unknown for 1879-CC Morgans. The color is plainly artificial, I suspect to hide some of the features which would identify it as a counterfeit at a glance.

I know nothing of MM positions on this date, but the coloring is clearly unnatural. Sorry.

I don't think this style CC mint mark was used until 1880.

Nothing stops a counterfeiter - I've seen 1913-S Lincoln Cent counterfeit coins - being a rare coin doesn't stop them there.

SuperDdave and Dave700x are both very good on Morgans with date and mint mark position. I looked at VAM World and could not find a 1879CC with the same mint mark position. Your coin appears to be a counterfeit. Due your own due diligence on weight, magnet test and VAM verification position of mint mark. If you can return the coin for a refund that would be your best bet.

I think "A while ago" renders that moot!

Agree with others mintmark position no good. Toning obviously doctored. Run away and get your $ back.

If you buy expensive coins and are not really semi-expert at least then buy certified coins only. Online I buy only certified coins. Price is also a indicator of bad coins. If they are so cheap it does not makes sense then it won't make cents. Nobody gives these coins away these days unless they are really dumb, and then you would be taking advantage of someone.

The coin's fabric is off. Unfortunately, it is clearly a fake.
