Made a trip to one of the local shops today. I didn't have any great expectations as I'm really only working on my Roosevelt dime set and I knew I had already stripped them of almost everything that I wanted in that area. Did get a couple of good deals though:

1985 S proof dime : $0.50
1966 SMS dime : $1.00
Jefferson nickel Set in a folder with a face value of $1.75 : $2.00
Jefferson nickel Set in a folder with a face value of $0.85 : $1.00
Canadian Quarter Set in a Folder with a face value of $4.00 : $3.00
Lincoln Head Cent collection 1909-1940 with a face value of $0.37 : $1.50
1979 P/D, 1980 P/D, 1988 P/D mint sets in a folder (sets were still in their wrappers) face value of $10.46 : $15.00

Not a bad haul: $17.63 in face value and 5 albums for $24

Not bad at all! What dates/mm did the Lincoln 09-40 set include? All worn coins or are some VF and better?

1910 P

1938 P
1939 P
1940 D/S

3 duplicates 20, 26, 28 (all P)

Looks like I miscounted only 35 cents not 37

As to grades... about what you'd expect... Most G4 in the teens, G4 through F in the 20's, and F through XF in the 30's and 40's

A couple stand out as being better than what you'd expect...
1917 - VF30
1929 - VF30
1940S - AU

I can hardly wait to hit that 50 post mark... All of these pennies will be going into the give away pile with the possible exception of the 17 and 29. Same thing goes for most of my Jeffersons... I've got 4 or 5 partial albums of circulated Jeffersons that are waiting to be given away. I'm so stoked about being able to post in the Trade forum. I mean I've got stuff that I could sell, but honestly being able to unload some of my duplicates and one offs in a trade for something that I "need" would just be awesome.

I've got a real bad habit of picking stuff up that I know that I don't want but it just being too good a deal to let slide.

Wow dude, that is a nice haul.

I have 1 coin shop within a 100 mile radius of me. And its.......not that spectacular. Not to mention 1 coin show a year, unless you want to take over a 2 hour drive.

My local show does something similar now and then and I seem to be the only one to buy them. I posted this in another post, but just this week I bought a similar penny folder that had 60 of the 90 coins with a vf20 1916s that was more than the $6 I paid for the set. My wife gets upset with me because I keep buying these when I find them but she does not seem to have a problem when I buy older rolls off of ebay. I have bought better quality coins from my dealer than the net and at a lot lower price.

Last year I really lucked out with a Whitman Lincoln Cent book from 1958 that was only missing 18 coins and was selling for only $10. He does not do this that often but when he does I grab what I can.

The shop I usually go to has about 10 sets of memorials complete through 2000 (no proofs) all BU for just shy of $20. I haven't been tempted at that price but if he gave me a 2 for 1 I'd buy them all.

springcypress if you were just starting out that would be a great way to go but where you can still find most of those in circulation by hunting through rolls it seems to be a coin toss on what to do. If they were in my local show I would most likely buy them (because I always do) but now that my kids are starting to get into collecting it would be perfect for them. Funny how you pass them up and I want to buy them, goes to show that if your dealer does not offer them, then you want them.
