I have too many silver-clad halves and want to sell some of them. I have been collecting coins since I was a kid and have yet to sell one. I have 455 (227.50 face) that vary in grade from black & ugly to AU that I'm willing to part with.

I'm considering asking melt value for them , about $1200.00 with silver @ $18.00+ an ounce. Is this realistic or will a dealer want to give me less than melt?

If you can find a dealer that will give you the price of melt, please let us all know who it is and how to find them. Right now a fair amount of dealers are being overwhelmed with silver coins because of the way it has jumped in price this last year and it may be hard to sell them that way. The first thing they will want to do is not even look at the lower grade coins unless they are rare or some type of variety or error coin, then out of the rest they will do some type of price break down. My local dealer does not go by melt but value of the coin. They want to give you a fair price but still be able to resell it at a profit to them. If they already have a ton of them they will most likely not buy them at all.

I would suggest a couple of things 1. go to local dealers and do a price comparison with them. Do not sell to the first person that offers you a price and let them know you are selling as a set and not individually.

2. Get yourself up to 50 posts and start selling them here. This is a great community and will try to help you out any way they can. This will also end up better for you because you can sell individually and will not be taken advantage of.

3. post some pictures here of what you are wanting to sell, this way others can see what you have and give more advice of where to look.

The UNC ones can be worth more then melt. I'd hold onto those and sell the remainder. Once all the "meltable" ones are gone focus on selling the higher grades for a premium if possible.

I imagined that having a mixture of grades would make someone want to pay melt. They could junk the sliders and sell the better stuff at a premium. I'm not in a position where I have to sell, I would just like to free up some cash to buy other coins that I really want.

I think I would go as low as $1000.00, do you think someone would pay that?

These are all 1965-1970?

Of course a dealer will want to give you less than melt--he has to really. Some won't want to give you more than $1.50 each, just walk away from them. A higher-volume dealer worth dealing with should offer in the $1000-1150 neighborhood in my opinion.

Well.. There's a scrap metal gut in my area who will buy coins from you at melt minus about 8%.

However, he's a scrap metal guy. You could show up with a complete set of BU Carson City Morgans and he'll still throw them in the fire.

I think it's a shame to unload coins like that.. unless of course they lift the ban on melting pennies. I've been hoarding pre 82s for a while now.

Dealers will give you a minimum of 10x face on 90%er (1964) silver halves right now....which is well below melt value of course, but a fair price for you and them.
But, as mentioned, this is a HUGH phenomenon right now with "silver hunters" going CRAZY, so many dealers are inundated with these and have more than they want of these.....and just might not be interested in buying yours unless they could get you to take a lot less money for them.
