My Father has got a couple of gold American coins which he received from my grandparents when he was very young and they have been sitting in a lock box for years. The coins are dated 1944 with lady librerty on one side and the American eagle on the other side with denomination of "Five D".
I've been doing some research on these coins and what I've gathered is that the five d "half eagles" were only produced until 1929.
Could my fathers coins be fakes?

If indeed they say 1944, yep. If they say 1844 they may well be real. The 1929 gold half eagle had the incuse Indian head. This?  Or This?  It all depends on the Mint mark and grade what value they have the 1844-C (Charlotte) and 1844-D (Denver) command nearly 2-3 times valued worth as do the 1844 Philadelphia and 1844-O (New Orleans) coins.  Crazyb0 shows an 1834 coin, but it reads "5 D." on the reverse. If it were an 1844 coin, it would have the "FIVE D." on the reverse. Like this:  If the coin does indeed have a 1944 date, then it is a fantasy coin. Either way, we really need pics of it.  In Memory of Crazyb0 12-26-1951 to 7-27-2020

Looks like it is on a chain. It may have been created as a locket of some kind rather than a deceptive coin? Is it the same size as an authentic U.S. coin?

Not a real coin but may well be made of Gold. I'd say have a jeweler take a look at it just in case it is Gold.

Thanks all for your replies. Good thing though is that it is real 24k gold. Wouldve been cool if it was a rite vintage coin but beggars can't be choosers I guess!

24 K gold would be unusual, Usually something like that would be 18K, 900 fine (US coin standard), or 14K. Rarely 22K (British coin standard).

Is it stamped 24K anywhere? I also think it would be unusual for it to be pure gold. The real deal isn't even that.  In Memory of Crazyb0 12-26-1951 to 7-27-2020
