This auction is about to end. Coin seems to be going for less than market value. I wonder if this surface texture is considered less desirable. Otherwise, seems to be a nice specimen.

Definitely has surface problems--maybe spent some time in salt water? or grit-blasted? I guess could be a very rusty die, but I'm pretty sure that this coin left the mint looking fine. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

Hey moxking. The link still works for me, is it broken on your end? This post was more about discussion than it was a heads up for a purchase.

I don't think it is from die wear, it looks like a problem coin to me. I'm not 100% on that, though.

Looks like it got acid treatment on the obverse side of it, reverse looks kind of nice. I would pass.

No that isn't "normal"...as Mac said, it seems altered for some reason, my guess would be that the obverse was scratched or blemished and someone attempted to equalize the coin, whether by a blastng or acid spread. Reverse has some die cracks and possible clash, which may account for the obverse anomaly.

Ok, this is good to know. That is what my gut told me ( PMD), but given the coin seemed in such good shape grade-wise, I thought perhaps it looked this way based on late die state. If someone has an example photo of what late die state Mercury dimes look like, please post. Thanks.

Yes, damaged coin, obverse has been etched by something.
