I have been wondering is there anywhere I can get scrap silver dimes for around $1 a piece? I have been wanting to buy up a bunch and did buy about 40 or 50 barber and Mercury dimes for 90 cents to $1 each, but don't know if that's really unheard of.

By my book if you can get them for about 1 - 1.10 you have a deal. I would try a local coin show, and buy in bulk for a better price.
