Call me an optimist if you like, but I have the feeling that out of fifteen gallons of pocket change you will find at least one coin worth a bit more than face value along with one or two errors / varieties..

to the forum and with everything said above. Especially the part about learning a bit about what to look for in your searching. http://www.coppercoins.com is a great reference for one cent coins. Some of the others I like are: http://www.varietyvista.com/, http://www.error-ref.com/, http://doubleddie.com/, http://www.lincolncentresource.com and that is just a few that are out there. There are also other forums that talk about all things numismatic (this one is the best, of course). It is a lot to learn. So take your time, ask questions, be patient, and have fun.

What John1 and Ilikeabecoins said.. Further, start with a segment of one denomination -- for example: Lincoln cents, memorial reverse, copper 1959 - 1982.. Now you're only dealing with 24 years worth of one value.. Definitely helps stave off grey matter overload..

EDIT: I didn't mean 'start with' as much as I meant 'concentrate on..' Yes, as you peruse here and those other sites take a look at as much as you can, or at least the modern coinage areas -- since that's what will be in your water cooler jugs.. ( How the heck did they get moved..? Topped off they had to have weighed a good 200 pounds each... )

As you're checking things out though, you'll find yourself developing interest in something moreso than the rest; let's say dimes, a step further Roosevelt's and more specifically the silver years.. With nearly no effort you now know where to begin.. Next thing you know you have working-without-a-net knowledge and can begin adding to it section by section..

And you're off! Have a wonderful journey..
