Just bought a nice Type 1 Buff, only problem is seller said has a "golden tone" on it as seen in these pix of theirs. I tried to accent the pic a bit but this is just about how I figure it'll look in hand. I grade at AU50 but wonder if this "toning" isn't from a chemical cleaning perhaps, or possibly PVC rubbing on wear spots. Your opinions on grade and coloring appreciated, other thoughts...keep to yourself

Thankx!

When I was a kid I used to clean my coins. Some cleans turned them yellow ... not usually this yellow ... but it may some parts of my Morgan dollars look like they had brass inside (below worn areas).

Ahh ok here goes nothing ; you obviously bought this coin knowing you can hopefully remove all that green slime. This Buffalo could be a 55 as long as you don't mind experimenting .

Really hard to tell anything from photos. The photos do make the coin look like there could be problems.

Can't grade from these pics. Probably a problem coin. Better pics when you get it in hand will help.

I can't get a feel for the depth with these pics. Maybe tilt the coin a little.

If that color is even remotely close to the actual coin, I'd send it back PDQ and cross that guy off for good.

I did get it for a good price, less than $10 at an on line auction... and no, can't just send this back unfortunately, it's the risks I take for the lesser prices...and much better deals usually...

My inner optimist says it is a bad photo and will look better in hand.

Got this coin in hand today, must say the seller pix sucked! The coin indeed was "gold-toned" close to what is in this I took but even more so, has a slight reddish hue around the edges. Circled in RED are areas I had noted as more "flat" golden tone, and was wondering if this is a rub area or something else, which will be determined after an acetone soak

This second set of pix is after a 20 minute acetone soak...VERY satisfied. I suspect the "golden toning" was a partial gold wash, not a complete coverage, perhaps just one coating. No areas of the "toning" remain, it is actually a blast white, full mint luster coin. Those "rub" areas remain, but I doubt if it is a circulation rub...NO other indication of circulation anywhere. No dings, bag marks, rims clear and even, no marks on edge periphery. I wonder if these "rub" areas are related to flip storage, my best guess. I would grade this at least an MS-62 if not higher(not used to high grade Buffs!) I do see die issues, as a VLDS deterioration around rim by LIBERTY, but other than that, is a great example! Think I picked out on this one!

MS-64. Very sharp strike, you got a bargain but it sure was a gamble based on seller photos.
