Government-Moves-To-Keep-$3m-In-Liberty-Dollars
Government Moves To Keep $3M in Liberty DollarsThe Justice Department is seeking to permanently keep more than $3 million in coins that were struck by anti-government activists who aimed to create a new currency to compete against the greenback.

In court papers filed in federal court in North Carolina, federal prosecutors say that they need another six months to complete their criminal investigation of the citizens who play a leading role in popularizing the alternative currency, known as the Liberty Dollar.

A prosecutor for the U.S. attorney's office in Asheville, N.C., Thomas Ascik, also sought an order that would give the government title to the more than 7 tons worth of gold, silver, and copper Liberty Dollar coins that the government seized last year in raids in Indiana and Idaho, according to court papers. Just last week, a dozen Liberty Dollar supporters filed suit in U.S. District Court in Idaho demanding the return of the seized coins.

Can't you still buy them off ebay for reasonable prices? I remember when this story broke, those coins were going for so much.

Yeah, if only we could predict the market on these sort of things.

I read while reading this story that Ron Paul is up in arms about this. In the past he has actually put bills before congress to make competing currencies leagal in the U.S. I don't know enough about econonmics to understand what that would do to the economy and the American dollar. Nothing good I assume.

So is it illegal to own these, or just illegal to try to use them as legal tender?

The legality or lack thereof has yet to be determined in a court of law. It is the accusation of the government that laws have been violated, while the makers of the Liberty Dollar maintain their right to barter with alternatives to Federally issued currency. Yes, this is a good case to watch.

Legality smegality. We're talking bout the govmint. If youse got money and they don't like you, they may raid your house just to see if they can catch you off base. I could cite just one case, but go look for yourself.

The cops did this to a man on the coast, and my brother, a cop at the time, defended them. We haven't had much to do with each other for a dozen years. Oh, yeah, in that case they shot and killed the unarmed home owner. And their dang snitch was unreliable, tweren't no drugs.

I hope they keep the coins! Obviously NORFED never had the intention of barter in mind when they made these coins. Otherwise it would have been called Liberty Bullion not Liberty Dollar.

It is illegal to represent something as a US Dollar when it is not... so it is not illegal to own or use Liberty Dollars, it is only illegal to represent them as US Dollars. So you can't pay for your burger using Liberty Dollars unless you explain that they aren't legal US tender, and that the use of the Liberty Dollars is a barter transaction and mutually agreed upon by both parties. Kind of a pain for sure, but it can be done.

Here is a thread with much of the background details on this story: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=21612

So when I find hordes of Canadian and foreign coins in rolls, they're illegal? And I've been housing them, so this means police can raid my house and shoot me? I'm so confused!
