Here, where those coins are rather uncommon, you'd get SO much more than $125..

Unless I am missing something key up there, for wholesale value (which is what any dealer is going to give you) this is probably close. You would get more by parting them out and selling them to individuals; not that you want to do that, I know! Again, I only took a quick look and might have missed something.

Hi Mike,
Probably the dealer just priced as if all of the coins were G/VG. But if some are F/VF, the value can change double or more. To be more accurate for yourself, try grading each one and see. On them, look carefully for overdates and Double dies. Many people don't bother too much, but there may be surprises! If you have a cherrypicker's guide or use the internet for a source to see what is there.
Take care,
Jim

Quite a few of those IHC dates have possibilities for varieties, where just one could easily clear $125 alone. Did the dealer or a random guy offer you $125? He may have spotted something obvious--and thought he could get an impulse sell--and bargain.

It depends on what type of hobo nickel too, I see a $700 one each time I go into my local coin shop

OK so I'm a little curious. First of all you said you were approached by a guy at a coin shop. Just what was this guy doing looking at your coins? Obviously not the coin shop dealer since you said he approaced you. Is that what he offered you for you collection or was he just voicing an opinion? Why did you have your entire collection there if you were not planning on selling it? Why would you be wondering around anywhere with all those coins unless you were going to sell them or going to a coin show? I'm all confused.

You could probably get $125 for the pennies alone

I would never get a quote from a dealer. It's like trading you car in at a dealership. They will only give you half price or lower then what it's actually worth. There are overhead costs (rent, utilities, salesmen)that has to come out of the profit of the coins they sell. They will always be higher in the same way also if you were to buy. Most stores mark up there products at least 75% to 100% from there cost. This is what has created e-bay (low-overhead)

A lot of times those guys will just glance at your coins....and assuming you have no high quality coins or "treasures" (varieties, errors, semi-key dates or even key dates)...they will just give you a general quick "shotgun" price. So if you have any good condition coins or dates, then you need to post some pics of them up right here on the coin forum so that they can be graded and discussed.
