I couldn't figure out where to post this so I am sorry if this is the wrong place.

I was just hoping to get a little information from someone. I am considering selling some coins here on the forum but am not really sure how to do it. I wan to obviously at least get back what I spent so I'm not losing out but also really don't want to post something that I may be grading incorrectly. Also, I have seen a lot of postings in the for sale part that say shipping included..... how can I know how much shipping will be if I haven't shipped it yet? Also what would be the safest options for receiving payments?

Any other hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
malissa

Further down on the main menu the Buy/Sell/Trade forum, is where you want to post them. If you are unsure as to the grade take pictures and post to the grading forum, someone there can get you a better idea as to the grade, just try to get the pics to have an accurate representation. As to shipping I know Canada Post can be a little slow and tricky, but if you offer actual shipping costs you can work that out at time of purchase with buyer through private messages (PM) Payments are safe through PayPal but get a little pricey. Postal Money Orders are good, not sure how they translate across borders though, US Dollars vs. Canada Dollars. Hope this helps some!

I've never tried sending a money order or personal check through to other countries but when my son was in Europe, I sent him cashiers checks. He would just go to an international bank and they would give him whatever monitary system of that country in cash. Of course they could have cheated him for all he knew of other countries money but I would suspect most banks are a little trustworthy.
As to you selling coins here, just try it. Post whatever you think is a fair price for a coin, attach a photo or very detailed description. You could also add a statement that you would pay postage so it is approximately added to the price. Anotner method would be the honor system where you just ask the buyer to add whatever the postage you paid if that is what you want.
One nice thing about this coin forum compared to something like ebay is that most, maybe not all, members are honest, coin collectors or dealers. I think almost any members here are worth a gamble in such dealings.
Of course if I'm wrong.........

thanks for the replies. I have never sold any of my coins before, only bought them. But now finding my self a little overrun with binders and boxes and containers and frames of coins all over the place. Some things just have to go whether I like it or not. Maybe I will try the first post or 2 to be smaller priced items just to see how it goes. I guess I have the worry that I will sell something rare and valuable and not even know it.

thanks again

Just remember, if you post, it isn't an auction, you post, you price, if there is a interested party they'll either post a reply or PM you. You can work out all the details until both of you are happy!

You can go here http://www.usps.com/tools/calculate...ulatepostage and get an estimate of costs just estimate the weight and destination Use a destination that encompasses as much area of the country as possible , any place closer will be slightly less but you will be covered for the furthest reaches .

I usually do not include alaska or Hawaii if you get a buyer from those locals then re estimate based on that person .

The forum appreciates pictures and if you want to recover then put the coins in the coins forsale forum and set a price let the people decide from good pictures and the cost .

If you have more questions please ask we want the buying selling on the forum to be enjoyable and as problem free as possible .

Ok I agree that I wouldn't want there to be any problems on the forum either cause I really like being included here. I do have one more question for now.... When I am shipping a coin to someone what is the safest kind of packaging? At the post office here they sell certain sizes of packaging (none that are very small) and they have those weird envelopes with bubble wrap inside or just a regular envelope or what?
Do you think it would be okay to make my first sale post a kind of practice post too? You know just make my post with pictures but also say that I am open to any comments that people may want to make on my posting or grading or whatever in the hopes that I might learn something? or would that just be weird? lol

sorry if these are kind of odd questions but I am a natural worrier. I've never sold things before so I'd like to make sure I end up doing it right for all involved.

thanks again

Hi Malissa,

If you click "all forums" that is at the top, under "What is in your pocket? You will see down near the very bottom the "Support and Testing" section and within that is the "testing forum". It is for just such things as you are asking for.

You can go there and click on new topic and make a post just like you want to try for selling with pictures, etc. To avoid confusion of newbies, you might want to make the price $xx.xx, but make every thing else like what you would. When the preview looks OK, then post it and then go back in 10 minutes or so and re-read the posting. I often find I miss mistakes if I read after posting, only to come back later and find it is a 1925 I am selling ( photo) when I call it a 1926 in the print. If it is what you want, click on the edit icon and change the price to the real one, Use the mouse to copy the whole message, go to the sell forum and click on the "new topic" and paste the message there, and go to the "title" section and add your title like " 10 morgans for melt" or whatever, preview, and then post. Hope this helps ease the anxiety. All have it one the first sell, the first ebay sell, and the first PCGS submission

Hi Malissa, also when you start listing coins for sale, state where you are willing to ship to. Some members will only ship to those in the US. Others will ship worldwide. We have alot of members from Australia that may also be interested in what you are selling.

Just some observations that I have noticed. Since I live in the US it usually doesn't affect me. I'm sure have been disappointed at not being able to buy something because the seller won't ship outside the US.

You don't ship "coins", you ship "numismatic collectibles", or "hobby supplies", or something else vague. My favorite was "numismatic teaching aides".
