Been a wile since ive posted took a little brake enjoying some outdoor fun in the sun. But my coin addiction continues. I have Completed my Lincoln Memorial cent collection 2008-82 mostly Red AU 81-59 Brown EF. As I continue to roll search for copper I have found some nice Red AU 81-59. Have been replacing the Brown ones. Need your opinion am I making a mistake buy doing this? Of course I'm keeping the ones I replace to start another set. Its just seems weired to end up with a collection of all Red cent. Seeking : More Red in EF & AU Rainman

Why would you think it is a mistake?

I never replace a coin in my collection unless the new one is clearly better than the old one. If I have to ask myself if the new one is really better than I keep the old one.
I do prefer red copper to brown if all else is equal.

Mistake may be the wrong word. But most of all the collections I have seen are all Brown & Red Mixed. I know the value would probably be higher with a all Red in collection. As I'm upgrading it just looks weird. And I also fear not being able to find all Red ones. Wondering dose any one have a all Red collection? Seeking:Info Rainman

Ah, now I understand!
Having the brown mixed with the red could be a motivator for you to find them all in red.
If it really bothers you, maybe you could assemble a full red collection independent of the finished brown one. Leave the current brown set intact until you find all of the red ones. Hopefully the blank holes will still be a good motivator to find them all!

Thanks for the your advice jbuck. I need 20 more Red ones. The crunch is on before all the copper is plucked from circulation. Seeking: More Cents Rainman

I'm a freak about having red cents... I put a set together from circulation that was all red. I enjoy looking at it more than I do my Dansco Lincoln set. Even though the Dansco is all red from 32 on, it bugs me no end that some of the earlier ones are brown... But there's just no way I'll ever be able to afford to upgrade the brown ones. I know it's wrong but I've seriouslly thought about stripping my key lincolns out of the album because they don't look like the others. But then I'd be even more upset by having holes.

Cool way to collect. Hmmm. I may do that too. The only problem I can see is that it'll be easier to get a Red 1973 than a Brown 2007.......... :)

I'll see if I can't post some pics when I get home... I've been on location for 18 days so I figure they're going to have to send me some relief before too long.

No mistake, any collection should be constantly improved on. I'm always working on my Lincoln collection. Putting together a red collection of Memorials is fairly easy, but you'll end up having to buy some unless you're extremely lucky. The problem is the quality of Memorials is generally horrible. I've been working very hard on finding high quality Memorials, it's very, very difficult. The vast majority I have are MS65+ RD, but I have a few MS63 RD that I simply cannot find upgrades for anywhere....and I've looked though probably thousands....including mint sets.
I have a bunch of very nice ones I'm going to add to my FS thread soon. When I go to shows I typically just buy a bunch of them without looking too closely because they are fairly cheap and my show time is limited. I figure when I get home I'll go though them and compare to what I have in my collection, then add the rejects to my spares collection.
Good luck with your quest! It's a lot harder than you think. The Memorial series is a very neglected and unappreciated by all.

I say do a couple of sets. Personally, I bought a Dansco album that when it comes to my Memorial cents I want all reds and hopefully MS63+. The problem I have had is that there is no way around buying the S's from about 76 on. My 80's-current I found all in circulation and have lucked out with some purchased rolls of 60's and 70's from ebay that filled in a fair amount of the earlier coins. The other thing I end up doing is buying in/complete sets from my local coin dealer and fill in holes there and then put lower grades back into the bought set. As of right now the only LMC's I need are a fair amount of S's and my 1970 small date. At the same time I am trying to have my 1935-1958 as reds as well, where I have done okay for the most part. The older Wheats I know I most likely will never have (at least until the kids are gone and don't need to borrow money) so I try to get the nicest browns that I can. The main goal is to have my earlier coins at a EF as my lowest grade and replace them with nicer ones as I go. If I just wanted a set I could put one together (except those mentioned above and the key dates) but I want something readable when I look at them. My wife is not into collecting but does find it fascinating to look through the folder and see how the coins go from a dark brown to a bright red as time passes. There is no problem in having more than one set and makes it easier sometimes when you want to keep a coin but it is not as nice as your original gem.

I personally prefer choice red to brown unless there is a significant problem with the red
