If that is the right colour and has been plated,
someone has holed it, possibly for a charm bracelet.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you.

Nickel plated. Hole drilled to make into a "charm" like that of a charm bracelet.

I saw these all the time as a kid growing up close to the border in the 60s and 70s. This was a common (big understatement) practice in Canada. Souvenir areas had shops with bracelets and necklaces having strings of these altered coins. Normally the maple leaf was showing.
