I purchased a Hungary 2000 Forint 2018 Fiumei Road Commemorative Coin on December 5th:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hungary-20....m2749.l2649

I received the package today, but the coin was missing. It appears as though someone cut the side of the packet to retrieve the coin.

This coin (in capsule) was basically sent in a plain envelope with VERY thin padding. I just can't understand why the seller did this. Oh well. I've requested a refund and sent the seller these pictures. I told him/her that this should have been sent in a padded envelope at the very least. It's too bad because I really like the coin. I'll get it elsewhere, I suppose. I'm glad it wasn't a high ticket item. Just a little bummed . . .

File it with eBay.

They usually side with buyers.

I definitely will, if it comes to that. I'm awaiting the seller's response. Hopefully, there won't be any issues.

They did it because they charged $2.55 USD for shipping on a $14 dollar item. They aren't going to spend 20+ Euros shipping an item they only got $16.55 USD for.

Never fun when that happens, but when you pay basically nothing for international postage that is a major risk and you will get shipping like that. Most sellers are more than happy to send it the more expensive safer way if the buyers are willing to pay.

And the question remains.... why would they do this? Did they really think that coin was going to survive that journey intact in that little envelope? I wouldn't ship a coin like this to a neighboring town, much less over seas.

I was actually a little puzzled by the shipping cost when I went through checkout. He did not offer any other option, and I didn't ask. Why would I? So, even in a typical padded envelope it would cost 20+ Euros? If I were the seller I wouldn't even bother offering international shipping then. No one is going to pay that, and it's too much to risk shipping the way this was. I stopped offering international shipping years ago.

Seems to me that securing capsule in sturdy plastic (such as a small ziplock bag) & taping to inside if envelope would have prevented coin being separated from the envelope. Looks to me more like it was caught up in sorting equipment & capsule tore envelope as it was being forced out the end. This is a trick I use when shipping.

I've considered that possibility too, ratman. The envelope is kinda thin, and that coin was a heavy weight just jostling around inside. But then, there are those...... humans.

probably was caught in the sorting belt.. and ripped through the packagae, it was sent as letter mail, and went through letter mail sorting, as opposed to oversized packages.. where there is more room to move..

Seems reasonable, and I WANT to believe this is what happened.

I've been getting packages this year shippped by registered mail from Poland, and they charge me $7.50 (26 PLN).

I would imagine a similar cost pertains for registered mail from other countries in central Europe? So I agree it isodd this service wouldn't be offered.

Rather common practice about this time of year to find something of value in the mail.

Chances are this one ended up on the floor of a postal facility because the seller did not secure the coin properly in the envelope.

Always ask seller for the thick envelope and remember him about the safe shipping http://penny-trader.fl-ink.com/coin-pack.html
