Which do you think would require less rolls to find? A Wartime Nickel, or a Wheat cent. How about an Indian Head cent, or a Buffalo nickel?

Well, I search both, and I'll find about 1-3 wartime nickels per box...and about 3-5 wheaties per box...but most of the wheaties are 50's, sometimes 40's...I have yet to find an IHC and i'll get a Buffalo nickel about every other box or so. hope that helps =)

Vince220,
Welcome to CCF,i am a LMC roll hound and I go through about $75.00 worth a month and I find on average four wheaties per box and some of them have been in the 30's and teens.I mainly search for varieties and errors. Good luck with your searching.

I agree with the other posters. I'd put the order from most common as:

Wheat Cents--1 every 5-10 rolls
War Nickels--1 every 25-50 rolls
Buffalo Nickels--1 every 100-200 rolls
Indian Cents--1 every 400+rolls

You might even find nickels older than the buffalo before you find an Indian Head cent.

I have not roll-searched since the 90's, but I am pretty close to the general consensus. I have found several Wheaties (mostly 40's and 50's), a few War and Buffalo nickels (about even), but never an Indian Head cent.

This topic does not mention silver, but I used to have good success with Dimes, Quarters, and Halves. My best find was one Barber dime that still lives in my 7070.

My averages

Wheats = 8-12 per box
Silver Nickels = 1-2 per box
Buffalo nickels = .25 (1 per every 4 boxes
Indian cents = .025 (1 per every 40 boxes)

I go through about 10 boxes of nickels and 5 boxes of cents per month.

I average 12-15 wheats per box. I've only got nickels at $10 a time and my first rolls got me a buffalo. Other than that I haven't found a silver yet. IMO and experience, wheaties are much more common and easy to find.

Thanks. I didn't know Buffalo nickels were so common. I guess I'll be searching more nickels now.

I haven't searched through nickels, but I find wheats in every 4-5 rolls. Hope this helps.

let's see... I've gone through a little under 3 boxes of cents this week ($75.00), and I've got 26 wheats on my desk, so that's about 3.5 wheats per 1000 cents.

Total for the year is in the neighborhood of $700 in cents without a single IHC, so that's... unlikely.

I've gone through about $450 in nickels, and gotten two War Nickels and one Buffalo (all in the past $100), so that's .02% and .01%, respectively, or one to two for every TEN thousand nickels.

There are guys on another board I frequent who go through several hundred dollars in cents every week, and have yet to find an IHC... No doubt there are a few out there, but they are extremely rare in circulation these days.

Related note- I also set aside S-mint Lincolns from '68-'74... I've only got 8 of those on my desk out of those 3 boxes.

I think the Buffalo's and the IHC's would be the fewest found......
The Mercury would be rarer too....Silver Roosevelt would be more likely, but with dimes those aren't easy either !

What have you been finding Vince220 ?

So far I have only searched nickels and cents. The nickels were all 2008 so that was pretty boring. On the cents, I've gotten about 1 Wheat cent per 5 rolls, and no Indian Head cents. I've only gone through about 30 rolls of cents.
