Hello. Like the title says, I am new to collecting coins and have always been really interested in WW2 so I figured I will start there. I am more interested in the details of and history behind the coins. I was wondering if you all could recommend some nice looking coins from that period for me. Thanks

A WW2 collection would be an awesome collection that could be assembled affordablly. Most coins and dates will be very available. A basic type set could consist of:

Lincoln Cent (copper)
Lincoln Cent (steel - 1943)
Jefferson nickel (1941/1942 nickel composition)
Jefferson nickel (1942/1945 35% silver " War Nickel")
Mercury dime
Washington quarter
Walking Liberty half dollar

You could later extend this dates/mint marks of one or all of the above if you wanted.

Here's a few pictures of some of my WW2 era coins...

Thanks for the response. I really like the engraving of the Walking Liberty, that's exactly what I was looking for. I really like the 1942!British half penny too. Is ebay a safe place to buy? Nice collection by the way. Do you have any of the Italian, German or Japanese coins?

The most interesting US coins from that period would be the 1943 steel cent since they only made them in that year and the 1942-1945 silver War Nickels that were made in silver and have a distinctive mintmark on the reverse, only from those years. These are affordable even in high grades. The other US coins from WWII are not particularly noteworthy. Hope this helps.

Very helpful, thank you. The silver nickels are very interesting, and I think my dad has a few of those steel pennies. Maybe I can talk him into giving me one. Do you collect anything from the other Allied or Axis countries?

I have had good luck with ebay overall if you go slowly and are very selective in what you buy. I don't have any of the Axis power coins but I do have a set of Tombac War Nickels from Canada, an Australian penny from 1942 and some 1944 Philippines coins.

to the forum. I've also had pretty good luck on ebay. I collect a lot of non-American coins, and a lot of those are inexpensive. So there isn't much cause for people to rip me off.

If you're not familiar with Numista, you should check it out. Here's a link to WW2 era coins. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...y&te=y&cat=y

Impressive beginning. I like how you chose a starting point and went full bore with higher grades. As for recommendations, looks like you're nearly there with the business strikes so I might offer proofs and perhaps commemoratives.

The European coins struck by nations involved in WW2 are fascinating, although the aluminium and zinc coins issued by the Nazis when they occupied other countries are generally very ugly!

France and Belgium both had 2-franc coins in 1944 that were struck in Philadelphia at the time of the Liberation. These would merit a place in a US WW2 type collection, especially the Belgian coin, as I believe it was struck on the same blanks as those used for 1943 US cents. The Italian coins of the war years are quite attractive and those of Great Britain were basically unchanged from 1937. The famous Canadian 'V' 5-cent piece is another classic WW2 coin, with the Morse Code 'denticles' around the reverse spelling out 'We Who Work Willingly Will Win'.
